This is the initial result of a long-term art project "Vietnamese cultural heritage through the perspective of contemporary artists" carried out by the artist group Heritage and Art, with the desire to preserve and "light up" the value of Vietnamese cultural heritage through contemporary art.
Visiting the exhibition space, viewers feel like they are immersed in a world "once upon a time" that is imbued with tradition but still lively and modern. Sharing the same inspiration from the national cultural heritage, each visual artist has an interesting way of expressing themselves.

Inspired by ancient motifs, artist Nguyen The Hung combines and blends modern elements to evoke cultural and social concerns in the series of lacquer paintings on canvas “The Other Side of Memory”. Artist Vu Thuy Mai carefully combines motifs from national treasures, brown-flowered ceramic vases of the Ly - Tran dynasties, blue-flowered ceramics of the Le So dynasties… into the silk paintings “Memory Trails”.
Artist Vu Duc Hieu adopted the materials and techniques of his ancestors’ pottery to express in the modern “Muong Pottery” series. Painter Le The Anh borrowed the image of the umbrella returning home to pay homage to his ancestors and the ancient Cheo story “Luu Binh - Duong Le” to tell the story of a woman in the oil painting “Nang Chau Long”. Painter Nguyen Minh (Minh Pho) with the series of works “Once upon a time” continued the story of the city - village - rice grains as typical representatives of Vietnamese cultural heritage and expressed them with the optimistic and poetic perspective of the contemporary young generation…
Stemming from their love for ancient motifs, fine arts, and national cultural heritage, the Heritage and Art group of 16 artists began implementing the project “Vietnamese Cultural Heritage through the Perspective of Contemporary Artists” in early 2024. They sat together, organized trips to collect documents, and met with relevant figures to learn more deeply and broadly about the value of Vietnamese cultural heritage. From there, each artist researched and built works with the common point of “solving the problem” of how to make national heritage and ancient art “live” with contemporary art.
“Once upon a time is the introduction to the heritage story that the Heritage and Art group wants to tell through the language of art. In that story, there are not only ancient motifs and patterns, folk paintings, water puppetry characters, images of village communal house carvings, but also layers of history, the values of Vietnamese cultural heritage expressed through a contemporary perspective,” shared artist Nguyen Minh - the initiator of the Heritage and Art group.
When learning about the project full of passion and love for the national cultural heritage of the Heritage and Art group, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son, Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture andEducation, expressed: "Connecting heritage and fine arts is an attractive topic, and being carried out by talented contemporary artists is very encouraging and supportive. This is a way to help the public understand more, love more the ancient values left by our ancestors and is a direction to preserve the heritage for a long time". However, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son also noted that when exploiting heritage materials, contemporary artists need to be careful, so as not to distort or misunderstand the traditional values of the nation.
Sharing the same view, Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum Nguyen Anh Minh said that inaccurate creation can easily be counterproductive, so when implementing projects, artists should have the support and companionship of experts in culture and heritage. In recent times, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum has supported artists to learn and research deeply about ancient fine arts and national treasures preserved here.
