On the night of Sunday, September 7th and the early morning of Monday, September 8th, 2025, astronomy enthusiasts around the world will witness a rare phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse, also known as a "Blood Moon". Vietnam, in particular, is located in the clearest viewing area, promising a spectacular view of the sky.

Observation period in Vietnam

The phenomenon will begin in late September 7th and last into the early morning of September 8th, with the following specific milestones:

The penumbral eclipse begins at 22:28 on September 7th.

The total phase begins (the Moon turns completely red): 00:30 on September 8th.

Peak time: 01:11 on September 8th

Full phase ends: 01:52 on September 8th

The phenomenon ended at 03:55 on September 8th.

Thus, the entire eclipse lasted more than 5 hours and 27 minutes, with the most spectacular "Blood Moon" phase lasting approximately 82 minutes.

Why does the Moon turn red?

When the Moon enters the Earth's shadow, sunlight is refracted and scattered by the atmosphere. Short-wavelength rays are filtered out, leaving only reddish-orange light to illuminate the Moon's surface, creating the mysterious "Blood Moon" phenomenon.

In particular, this eclipse occurs just a few days before the Moon reaches perigee – its closest point to Earth in its orbit – so the Moon will appear larger than usual, creating what is commonly known as a "Super Blood Moon".

Vietnam observes favorably.

People across the country can fully observe this total solar eclipse if weather conditions are favorable. The best time is from 00:30 to 01:52 on September 8th, when the Moon is completely enveloped in the Earth's shadow and glows a deep red.

For observers in Asia and Australia, including Vietnam, the Moon will be high in the sky – ideal for viewing and photography.

Advice for observation

No safety glasses are needed; it can be observed with the naked eye.

Prepare binoculars or a camera to capture sharper images.

Choose a location with good ventilation and minimal artificial light, such as the suburbs, rural areas, or elevated regions.

A highly anticipated astronomical event.

The "Blood Moon" is not only a fascinating astronomical phenomenon but also offers a unique experience for those who love the night sky. It's a rare event where the moon appears larger than usual and glows a brilliant red, transforming the sky into an unforgettable, magical spectacle.

The night of September 7-8, 2025 will undoubtedly be an unforgettable milestone for the Vietnamese astronomy community, as well as millions of people around the world.
