The Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine and Pharmacy recently held a workshop on "Digital transformation in training and research on traditional medicine and pharmacy", affirming that this is an inevitable trend in traditional medicine education and research. Digitalization is not only a technology but also a comprehensive innovation platform, improving the quality of training, research and health care for the people.
The event took place in the context of Vietnam actively implementing Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo on developing science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation to 2030, with a vision to 2045.
1. Digital transformation – an inevitable trend of traditional medicine education
For the healthcare sector, digital transformation is not only a major policy but also an inevitable trend, promoting innovation in training methods, improving the quality of research and applying technology to serve people's health.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy - Director of the Academy emphasized that digital transformation at the Academy is not just about equipping new technology but is a comprehensive innovation process, including management, teaching, research, thinking and learning culture.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, Director of the Vietnam Academy of Traditional Medicine: Digital transformation at the Academy is not just about equipping new technology but is a comprehensive innovation process, including management, teaching, research, thinking and learning culture.
Over the years, the Academy has proactively deployed many digital solutions. Online learning management systems (LMS), e-learning materials and online question banks are being strongly developed, helping students access knowledge quickly and flexibly. In scientific research, the Academy has begun to apply artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to analyze and manage topics, improving the quality and efficiency of research.
In particular, the team of lecturers and students are gradually adapting to modern teaching and learning methods, flexibly combining tradition and technology. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Huy, this workshop is the next step on the digitalization journey, creating an open forum for experts, scientists, and lecturers to share experiences, discuss and propose practical solutions for Traditional Medicine.
2. Digital health – opportunities and challenges in health care
Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang – Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training – affirmed that digital health is the next breakthrough development of e-health. If e-health focuses on improving the operational efficiency of medical facilities, digital health focuses on patients, changing the model and method of service provision, personalizing health care, helping people access quality services anytime, anywhere.
According to Dr. Quang, digital health not only improves the efficiency of medical examination and treatment but also promotes the development of high-quality human resources with digital skills, ready to apply technology in professional work and management. These benefits also come with legal challenges, data security and people's accessibility, requiring medical facilities, institutes/schools and management agencies to coordinate closely to exploit the full potential.

Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang - Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Training (Ministry of Health) spoke at the Workshop.
3. Applying digital transformation in training and research of Traditional Medicine
The workshop focused on four key contents: Updating the national and health sector digital transformation orientation; sharing experiences and digitalization models at training institutions; applying AI and big data in research and teaching, and proposing a roadmap to build a smart digital academy suitable for the characteristics of traditional medicine.
Some outstanding solutions implemented by the Academy include:
- Building an electronic learning materials database: Helping students, lecturers and researchers access information quickly, diversely and continuously updated.
- AI applications in research: Data analysis, result modeling and scientific decision support, increasing research accuracy and efficiency.
- Traditional-technological integrated training: Courses combine traditional theory with digital practice, helping students get used to modern learning methods while still preserving the identity of traditional medicine.
- Developing high-tech human resources: Training doctors and pharmacists who are knowledgeable about data and technology and ready to apply digital tools to professional and management work.
The Academy also pays special attention to connecting and sharing data between medical information systems to create large, accurate, complete, clean, and live data warehouses to serve scientific research and effective training.
4. Smart Digital Academy - the foundation of innovation

Mr. Nguyen Minh Hien - Deputy Head of IT Department of the Academy reported at the conference.
The Academy's goal is to build a smart digital Academy, where digital technology is integrated into all activities: Management, teaching, research, student-lecturer interaction and health care services. This is a pioneering model in the Medical and Pharmaceutical schools, opening up a direction for sustainable development, international integration and enhancing the competitiveness of the Vietnamese health sector.
The Academy identifies digital transformation as the foundation of innovation, helping to: Optimize management and training processes, reduce administrative time, increase teaching efficiency; Improve the quality of scientific research, improve the ability to analyze, forecast and apply research results; Create a flexible learning environment, combining tradition and modernity, helping students develop creative thinking and digital skills and form a high-tech medical workforce, meeting the needs of health care in the digital age.
The workshop is also an opportunity for management agencies, institutes/schools, technology enterprises and experts to share results, propose directions and directions for cooperation. Delegates discussed: Perfecting the legal system for digital transformation of healthcare, ensuring data security and equitable access to services; building a smart university model, pioneering in innovation in training and research; developing a large medical database, serving scientific research, training and effective management; improving the capacity of high-tech human resources, creating a new generation of doctors and pharmacists, ready to integrate digital technology in their profession.
The results, ideas, and models shared at today's workshop will be a valuable source of information to help the Academy build a digital development strategy for the 2025-2030 period, aiming to become one of the pioneers in digital transformation in the field of Medicine and Pharmacy.
With the guidance and support from the Ministry of Health, the Department of Science, Technology and Training, and proactive efforts from the Academy, the digitalization journey in education and research of Traditional Medicine is on the right track.
