The article below is a shared post by Ms. Ly (Nanning, China) that is being widely shared on the Toutiao platform.
I am the youngest of two siblings. My older brother, Gia Khanh, is five years older than me. Born into a poor family, my older brother had to drop out of school early to work to help the family improve their lives. Thanks to that, I had enough conditions to complete 12 years of high school and 4 years of university.
An incident that happened many years ago helped me understand family affection more deeply. It was a winter afternoon when my mother suddenly fell ill and had to be rushed to the emergency room. After hearing the news, I immediately dropped everything and rushed to the hospital. Looking at my mother lying on the bed, her face pale, my heart ached.
At the time I had to take care of my mother in the hospital, I was almost dizzy because I still had to maintain my job at the company. However, although I was exhausted from working during the day and having to take care of my mother at night, I still felt a little relieved when I saw her gradually recovering.
As for Gia Khanh, his brother had to work far away so he couldn't help take care of his mother. He only rushed to visit his mother on the first day. Understanding his hardship, I didn't blame him. However, because I was alone and had to take on many tasks, I was a bit tired.
The night before my discharge, my mother suddenly called me to sit in front of her. She held my hand and said: “Li, thank you for your hard work. I know you have been very tired all this time.” As soon as I heard her say that, I quickly brushed it off: “Don’t say that, Mom. This is my duty and responsibility.”
Mom sighed and continued: “Actually, I have already made a will. I will leave the 3 million yuan (about 10 billion VND) that I just received as compensation for the land to your brother. Would you feel deprived if you did not inherit any property?”
I was surprised, I didn't expect my mother to ask me this question. I looked into her serious eyes and hesitantly asked: "Why are you asking me that?"
Mom was silent for a moment and then slowly said: “I know that Gia Khanh not being able to come to take care of me this time can make you suffer. But your brother has sacrificed a lot, dropped out of school, put his dream aside to help mom earn money. Now he still has to work hard. So I think this money is necessary to support your brother. The most important thing is that I want to use this money for Gia Khanh to fulfill his dream, to help my brother have a better life.”
As soon as I heard about my mother's plan, I fully supported it. I understood my brother's disadvantages so I wasn't jealous at all.
The next day, my mother was discharged from the hospital. I took her home and continued to take good care of her. Gia Khanh also knew about this decision.
After receiving the money from my mother, my brother worked harder to pursue his dream. He used the money to open a woodworking workshop. After only a few years of business, my brother made a big profit. Every time I saw my brother's busy appearance and confident smile, I felt really relieved.
Seeing my brother and I grow up and love each other, my mother was filled with pride. She often said: "Seeing you guys succeed like that, no matter how hard and tiring my life is, it's worth it."
As time passed, my brother and I gradually entered middle age. Each of us gradually had our own families and careers. But no matter how busy we were, we still made time to accompany our mother.
I really feel happy and secretly grateful to have a brother who is willing to sacrifice with my mother to take care of me. As for my mother, I still admire her and do not know how to repay her for raising me.
In early 2021, my mother passed away after a long battle with illness. With only two siblings left to rely on, Gia Khanh continued to show his role as an older brother, always caring for and supporting his younger sister.
Although I did not inherit money from my mother, I understand that the silent sacrifices of both my mother and brother are much more valuable. Without the work of these two people, I certainly would not have the good life I have today. I am grateful for this.
