Should Ho Chi Minh City students be given make-up classes and a longer Tet holiday?

There are two opinions about the 9-day Tet holiday this year for students in Ho Chi Minh City, while last year it was 16 days.

As reported by Tuoi Tre Online , according to the 2024-2025 school year plan of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, students at all levels in the area will have a total of 9 days off for the 2025 Lunar New Year.

Specifically, students will have Tet holiday from January 25 to February 2, 2025 (ie December 26 to January 5).

Meanwhile, for Lunar New Year 2024, students of all levels in Ho Chi Minh City will have a total of 16 days off.

Parents worry that their children will have a long Tet holiday and no one will take care of them

Reader Lai Thi Kim Oanh thinks that this year's Tet holiday is quite reasonable and that students returning to school on the 6th is appropriate.

Agreeing with the above opinion, reader Thu Cuc said that according to the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday schedule being submitted to the Prime Minister , civil servants and public employees will have 9 days off, from January 25 to February 2, 2025, that is, from December 26, year of Giap Thin to January 5, year of At Ty.

This time and the Tet holiday of students in Ho Chi Minh City are quite similar.

"This way, many families will be able to conveniently arrange their time to fit their own and their children's schedules. On the contrary, if the employee's schedule is 1 week while the child's schedule is 2 weeks, it will be difficult to take care of the children and pick them up," reader Thu Cuc wrote.

Can I make up for the longer Tet holiday?

Many readers compared it to the 16-day Lunar New Year holiday that students in Ho Chi Minh City will have in 2024.

Reader Dung Huynh shared: "Students should have more time off because they still have time to visit their hometowns during Tet and reunite with their grandparents. It should not be based on weekends or weekdays. It is also possible to have them off until mid-week, so that they can have 12-15 days off for Tet.

Along with that, it is possible to relax travel to avoid traffic jams at the end of the year and the beginning of the year."

Reader Tran Quang Dinh said that despite having so much time off for Tet last year, the second semester exams still took place on schedule and the school year plan was completed "smoothly".

Some readers also agree with this opinion, saying that during May, students mostly just "play".

Therefore, it is possible to consider a longer Tet holiday instead of the period after the second semester exam.

According to SG readers, many schools finish their second semester exams before April 30. After that, students still have to go to extra classes for about 3 weeks before summer break. That time is mainly for playing, not studying much because the exams are over.

"The Tet holiday is too short, while after April 30, there is not much teaching and learning left because the exams are over. I suggest that Ho Chi Minh City reconsider both of these issues... It is best to extend the holiday and after the second semester exams, study for exactly one week and then take a break," a SG reader commented.

Reader Khai Phong pointed out another "paradox": university students get a whole month off, while primary and secondary school students only get one week off.

Reader Hung Thinh suggested that we could consider the option of "making up lessons" before Tet to have more time off. For example, Saturdays of the weeks before or after Tet holiday can be used as make up lessons and surely many parents and students would agree.

"If necessary, teach online, it's normal in the 4.0 era," reader Hung Thinh wrote.

Any style is fine!

Meanwhile, reader Nguyen Thanh Hoa commented: "There are many things to talk about when it comes to Tet holiday. How can we please everyone? Just follow the Labor Law and take the holiday."

"There is only the time and schedule of Tet holiday that is discussed and debated every year. Just like other normal holidays, there are regulations and implementation. Just follow them," reader Chu Ut Truong expressed.
