On the evening of November 6, the area under the Ba Thon bridge box culvert connecting Thanh Loc 43 street with the right bank of the Saigon river (near Giao Khau communal house, old district 12, Ho Chi Minh City) suddenly had a large stream of water from the river overflowing due to a broken section of the culvert.
The incident occurred at a time when Ho Chi Minh City was experiencing what was forecast to be the highest tide of the year, causing river water to quickly flood into surrounding residential areas.
Mr. Huynh Van Sang - who lives near the scene - said that at about 6 p.m., the water started to overflow the banks, affecting his house. Immediately after that, the authorities arrived, used a pump to drain the water and urgently reinforced the broken area.
According to Tuoi Tre Online , the actual incident occurred at around 3pm the same day, when a part of the tide-prevention culvert at Ba Thon canal (Ward 55, An Phu Dong Ward, District 12 previously) broke. The damaged section had an area of about 7m2 .
Immediately afterwards, military forces along with irrigation and dike management units urgently arrived to fix the problem.
By about 7:00 p.m., the situation was basically under control.
