The cultural industry ignites the national spirit.

The recent consecutive successes in tourism, performing arts, film, and cultural exhibitions in Hanoi not only affirm the enormous potential for the development of the capital's cultural industry but also create a strong ripple effect for the overall development of Vietnam's cultural industry.

Notably, cultural activities with strong national appeal have opened up further opportunities for Vietnam to develop a cultural industry market rich in identity.

The impetus comes from cutting-edge sectors.

Following the explosion of programs like "Brother Overcoming a Thousand Obstacles" and "Brother Says Hi," Vietnam has gradually developed an increasingly professional and large-scale entertainment industry. As the cultural center of the country, Hanoi has become the focal point for many major performances. Over the past month, Vietnamese music has witnessed an unprecedented phenomenon: the flourishing of large-scale, socially relevant artistic programs – dubbed "national concerts" by young people – to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd.

Revolutionary music nights, brimming with love for the homeland and national pride, have a special appeal, drawing millions of people in long queues to enjoy them. Notable examples include "Vietnam in My Heart," " Hanoi - The Everlasting Aspiration of Vietnam," "Homeland in My Heart," "V Concert - Radiant Vietnam," "V Fest - Brilliant Youth," "8Wonder," and "Rock Concert - The Heart of Vietnam"...

Many experts believe that recent "national concerts" have not only created spectacular stages but also opened up a new approach to shaping Vietnam's entertainment industry. Previously, entertainment was often confined to commercial aspects and competition based on mainstream music, but with "national concerts," music is placed within the context of culture, history, and national aspirations, thereby forming a new standard. Vietnamese audiences are not only interested in popular tastes but also seek profound spiritual values.

Along with music, cinema has also shown strong growth in recent times, becoming one of the leading sectors of the cultural industry. In the last few years, Vietnamese films have significantly dominated the box office. Many works have become "hot topics" on social media with huge revenues, typical examples being "Mai," "Bo Gia," "Dat Phuong Nam," and "Lat Mat"...

In particular, political and revolutionary films, which were once associated with the prejudice of being "made and then stored away," "shelved," and only serving propaganda purposes, have now undergone a strong transformation in filmmaking and artistic creativity, becoming box office hits that touch the hearts of millions of viewers. A series of films such as "Peach, Pho and Piano," "The Tunnel," and "Red Rain"... have achieved astonishing box office success.

Creating cultural value chains

The recent success of the film "Red Rain" can be considered a remarkable phenomenon. Not only did it achieve box office success, setting a new box office record for a Vietnamese film, but it also caused the novel of the same name by author Chu Lai, originally published many years ago, to suddenly sell out. This ripple effect brings double value to the country's cultural life, as the publishing industry also made its mark after a relatively quiet period.

A representative from Fahasa Bookstore stated that before the film's release, the novel's sales were stable, but then surged dramatically. As of September 4th, the number of books sold nationwide and through e-commerce channels had exceeded 13,000 copies, reflecting the exceptional appeal of this literary and cinematic phenomenon.

“The boost from the screen has led to a surge in demand for the novel, quickly making it one of the most prominent titles in bookstores and on e-commerce platforms. It can be affirmed that ‘Red Rain’ is Fahasa’s most remarkable book sales phenomenon in recent years. This craze demonstrates the strong synergy between literature and film,” a representative from the company shared.

According to Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung, the cultural industry will only truly succeed when cultural fields complement and interact with each other, creating a continuous system of values. This system of values will become the foundation for culture to not only have spiritual significance but also to be a driving force for economic development, bringing significant revenue to society.

This was clearly demonstrated at the National Achievements Exhibition, which took place from August 28 to September 15, 2025 at the Vietnam Exhibition Center (Vietnam National Exhibition and Convention Center - VEC, Dong Anh, Hanoi).

With the theme "80 Years of Independence - Freedom - Happiness," the exhibition brings together thousands of artifacts, documents, display models, and modern technology applications to vividly tell the story of Vietnam's history, culture, economy, and society.

Over two weeks, the event attracted more than 6.5 million visitors – a record number unprecedented for an exhibition in Vietnam, and is expected to continue increasing until the closing day. This massive number of visitors not only generated direct revenue for the exhibition but also gave a significant boost to Hanoi's tourism and service sectors, contributing to a threefold increase in the number of visitors to the capital during the National Day holiday on September 2nd compared to the same period last year. This clearly demonstrates that, if properly organized, exhibitions and trade fairs can become profitable cultural industry products while also contributing to education and raising social awareness.

Building a cultural industry market rich in identity.

Resolution No. 03-NQ/TW dated July 16, 1998, of the Central Committee stipulates: “The general direction of our country's cultural cause is to promote patriotism and the tradition of national unity, the consciousness of independence, self-reliance, and self-strength in building and defending the socialist Fatherland, and building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity...”.

Resolution No. 33-NQ/TW dated June 9, 2014, sets the goal: "To build a healthy cultural market, promote the development of the cultural industry, and strengthen the promotion of Vietnamese culture."

The Strategy for the Development of Vietnam's Cultural Industries until 2020, with a vision to 2030, issued by the Government in 2016, also affirms that cultural industries are an important component of the national economy. The main objective by 2030 is to strive for revenue from cultural industries to contribute 7% of GDP. The strategy sets out requirements for the sustainable, diversified, synchronized, and modern development of cultural industries, applying advanced technology, building cultural products and services with reputable brands in the region and internationally, meeting the standards of developed countries, and participating extensively in the global value chain.

At the National Conference on the Development of Vietnam's Cultural Industries on December 22, 2023, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized: The development of cultural industries must contribute to building an advanced Vietnamese culture, rich in national identity, unified in diversity; linked to promoting and spreading the image of Vietnam and its people; and at the same time contributing to the preservation and promotion of national cultural identity. Cultural industry products and services need to meet the criteria of "Creativity - Identity - Uniqueness - Professionalism - Healthiness - Competitiveness - Sustainability," based on the "National - Scientific - Popular" principles of the Vietnamese Cultural Outline (1943), gradually building a national brand and participating in the global value chain.

The impressive figures regarding tourist arrivals, revenue from performing arts, film, exhibitions, publishing, etc., in recent times are clear evidence of the strong vitality of Vietnam's cultural industry, with Hanoi playing the role of the "Creative Capital". This achievement affirms that when culture knows how to ignite the national spirit and nurture products rich in identity, it not only conquers the public and expands markets but also becomes an important driving force for socio-economic development, contributing to the realization of the aspiration to build a prosperous, civilized, and resilient Vietnam that integrates into the global community.
