The event was attended by Professor Irene Tracey, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Dr. Nick Leimu-Brown, Principal of Linacre School and Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of Sovico Group, co-founder of the Pioneer Scholarship Fund with the University of Oxford.

With an initial total funding value of £17.83 million, of which £13.7 million is contributed by Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and £4.13 million is co-funded by the University of Oxford, the Pioneer Scholarship Fund will provide long-term study and research opportunities for outstanding postgraduate students, particularly from Vietnam.
To date, £700,000 has been disbursed, funding scholarships for 11 outstanding students studying at Oxford in the fields of Education , Chemistry, Clinical Medicine, Genomic Medicine and Business Administration (MBA).

Speaking at the meeting, General Secretary To Lam welcomed the cooperation between Oxford University and Vietnamese enterprises and research institutions, and the cooperation between Sovico Group, Vietjet and Oxford University. He hoped that the cooperation would continue to develop to turn knowledge, science and technology into development programs and projects to serve the people and the development of the country. Cooperation in education, training and scientific research are important pillars in the relationship between Vietnam and the UK. The General Secretary believes that these pillars will continue to be promoted in the coming time on the basis of upgrading the diplomatic relations between the two countries to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Professor Irene Tracey, Principal of Oxford University, shared: “We deeply appreciate the support of Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and Vietnamese enterprises for the Pioneer Scholarship Fund. We are proud to jointly implement these era-changing initiatives, appreciate the achievements that have been made and look forward to expanding cooperation in the fields of education, research and innovation, creating positive impacts for the world.”
Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao gave a short and emotional speech: “Knowledge is the seed of peace and prosperous development. I hope this scholarship will help young Vietnamese people confidently reach out to the world, bringing knowledge and compassion to serve their homeland and community.”
One of the scholarship recipients, Pham Minh Phuong, shared: “The Oxford Pioneer Scholarship gives me the opportunity to study and develop in a world-leading, dynamic and creative scientific research environment. With support of billions of VND for each academic year, Vietnamese students are confident and motivated to strive and develop to contribute meaningful research to humanity.”
Dr Pham Minh Phuong completed her MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, and is currently a fourth-year PhD student at the University of Oxford.
The Pioneer Scholarship Fund opens a journey to connect Vietnamese dreams with global knowledge, where compassion, science and education meet to continue writing the beautiful story of humanity.
