This initiative was launched in the context that play is an essential human need of all ages and is particularly significant for the holistic development of children. However, this activity has not yet received the proper recognition and attention it deserves in the face of major societal trends and changes.
A total of 138 countries across all regions co-sponsored the Resolution, with Bulgaria, El Salvador, Jamaica, Kenya, and Luxembourg co-authoring it alongside Vietnam. The resolution calls upon all member states and agencies within the United Nations system, as well as other relevant stakeholders, including non- governmental organizations, research institutions, and the private sector, to celebrate this day in order to raise awareness of the importance of play in social life.
In his remarks introducing the Resolution to the General Assembly, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, highlighted the role and significance of play in human development and social life. The Ambassador emphasized that play is a fundamental foundation for human development at all ages. Play helps people overcome social and cultural barriers to explore, learn, and connect, fostering creativity and innovation, while contributing to the holistic development of children, the future generation of humanity, both mentally and physically. Furthermore, play promotes a culture of dialogue, solidarity, and cooperation, contributing to conflict prevention and peacebuilding .
On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang thanked the active participation and support of the United Nations member states and expressed his hope that this initiative would continue to spread, contributing to maximizing human potential and promoting the commitment to implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
According to the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, the Resolution on International Play Day not only marks an important step in raising awareness of children's rights globally but also holds special significance for Vietnamese children. The addition of another international holiday in June – “Vietnam Children’s Action Month” – will make activities protecting children’s rights in Vietnam even more meaningful and practical. |
