National hero Nguyen Trung Truc's real name is Nguyen Van Lich, also known as Chon, born in 1838 in Xom Nghe, Binh Nhut village, Cuu Cu Ha commune, Cuu An district, now Thanh Duc hamlet 1, Binh Duc commune, Tay Ninh province. His family lived by fishing. During his lifetime, he was proficient in martial arts, knowledgeable about the books of sages, upright in character, and patriotic.
The victory of Nhat Tao on December 10, 1861 left a bright mark in the history of our nation's resistance against foreign invaders. Together with the feat of capturing Rach Gia fort on the night of June 16, 1868, it brought the fisherman hero Nguyen Trung Truc into the ranks of national celebrities, as the famous scholar Huynh Man Dat described in his masterpiece, "The red fire of Nhat Tao shook the heavens and the earth - The sword of Kien Giang made the gods and ghosts cry out".

With his noble qualities of morality, intelligence and courage, Nguyen Trung Truc has entered the history of the nation as an indomitable symbol of the Southern people, leaving behind the immortal saying: "When the Westerners have uprooted all the grass in the Southern country, then the Southerners will no longer fight the Westerners."
Every year, on the 11th and 12th of the 9th lunar month, at the historical relic site of Xom Nghe area, Binh Duc commune, the people and local authorities solemnly organize the death anniversary of Mr. Nguyen - to commemorate the hero in cloth clothes, the outstanding son of the homeland.

On behalf of the Party Committee, government and people of Binh Duc commune, Chairman of the People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Giang expressed his respect and deep gratitude for the great contributions of National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc. At the same time, he affirmed that the heroic sacrifice and indomitable spirit of Mr. Nguyen will forever be a shining example, urging generations of the commune to promote the tradition of patriotism, solidarity and dedication to build the homeland and the country more and more prosperous.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - 6th generation descendant of National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc spoke at the death anniversary ceremony.
Proud of the resounding feat and heroic sacrifice of National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc, in Binh Duc commune and communes of Ben Luc district (old), schools and streets were named after National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc, of which, Nguyen Trung Truc Primary School, Binh Duc commune was built with a total investment of over 43 billion VND and opened for the 2025-2026 school year.
Currently, Binh Duc commune continues to plan to renovate and upgrade the historical relic site of the Xom Nghe area with a total area of about 22,500m2 to honor Mr. Nguyen.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam - the 6th generation descendant of National Hero Nguyen Trung Truc expressed his joy and emotion when the annual death anniversary of the great hero was organized thoughtfully and solemnly by the government and relatives. He hopes that the work of embellishing and upgrading the historical relic site of the Xom Nghe area will soon be completed, creating a space to display, introduce and promote the image of the hero Nguyen Trung Truc to the people and tourists from near and far.

In the solemn atmosphere of the anniversary, many volunteer groups from neighboring provinces and cities also came to Binh Duc to contribute to serving the people and tourists. Free food stalls, from cool drinks to hot vegetarian meals, are the sincere and deep affection of the people of the South to Hero Nguyen Trung Truc.
Mr. Le Quoc Khanh and the volunteer group from An Giang came to cook free food to serve the people attending the ceremony, sharing: “Our group has been here since the 9th. First, to burn incense in memory of Mr. Nguyen Trung Truc, then to cook vegetarian noodles to treat the people, hoping that everyone will have a warm meal when attending the death anniversary. As the next generation, we want to promote the patriotic spirit of Mr. Nguyen Trung Truc, at the same time spreading love, solidarity and sharing. Mr. Nguyen Trung Truc sacrificed for the people and the country, so doing something useful for the community on his death anniversary, for us, is also the most sincere way to show gratitude.”
