It is not difficult to see that 2025 has become a year of sublimation for historical films. A series of resounding works have been released one after another, from “Tunnel: Sun in the Dark”, “Red Rain”, to “Fight to the Death in the Sky”. Currently, audiences are eagerly awaiting “Sound Across the Ocean”, which is expected to be widely released in the near future.
If in the past, historical films were often labeled as being picky, dry or only for those who love the subject of war, now box office revenue and media coverage have shown a completely different picture.
Without heavy propaganda elements, historical films now have a renewed way of telling stories, combining entertainment elements, modern cinematography and human emotions, making viewers see history through a close and vivid lens.
That change is contributing to bringing Vietnamese historical films closer to the general audience, especially GenZ - a generation considered "extroverted" and difficult to please.
When asked about his feelings after watching the movie Red Rain, Pham Phuc Phuc, a 10th grade student at Huynh Man Dat High School for the Gifted, Rach Gia Ward, said: “Before, I thought historical movies were all about war, difficult to understand and very sad. But after watching Red Rain with my family, I found the story very touching, with humanity, camaraderie and sacrifice .”

Two historical blockbusters worth hundreds of billions were recently released in theaters.
From the “fever” on the big screen, documentaries about historical events and historical witnesses have gradually attracted young people. The most recent is the documentary “On the New Front” produced by the People’s Army Cinema.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, a student at Soc Son Secondary School in My Thuan Commune, emotionally said: “After watching the film, I understand more about the fighting process and the lives of the veterans. I feel proud of those who sacrificed to protect the Fatherland. I think I need to learn the brave and resilient spirit of the veterans to apply in my studies and daily life.”

A beautiful scene from the documentary On the New Front.
Mr. Tran Dinh Duong, a History teacher at Huynh Man Dat High School for the Gifted, Rach Gia Ward, believes that teaching and learning history through movies is a new and effective method.
“Movies are intuitive and vivid, helping students absorb knowledge easily and at the same time increase their interest in learning. By combining knowledge, emotions and life values, history is no longer just dry numbers or events, but becomes a comprehensive experience, helping students learn and live, understand the past, and form a positive mindset and attitude for the future.”
