Delegates visit the model.
Before the workshop, delegates visited the experimental model of alternating wet and dry irrigation, the experimental layout and related implementation and monitoring measures at Tho Xuan Center for Research, Testing and Plant Services.
Director of Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute Nguyen Dinh Hai spoke at the workshop.
At the workshop, representatives of the Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute reported the initial results of rice production to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Accordingly, in the spring crop of 2025, the Japanese company Faegre cooperated with the Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute to implement a pilot model of rice production to reduce emissions on a scale of 4,000 m2 through the alternate wetting and drying method (AWD) at the Tho Xuan Center for Research, Testing and Crop Services. The goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of AWD in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (CH4, N2O) and maintaining rice productivity. Through monitoring and comparison with the control field, the AWD experiment showed that rice plants in both models developed similarly, with no signs of slow growth or serious pests and diseases recorded in the AWD field. In particular, rice leaves in the AWD field were stronger, indicating that the root system developed more strongly in response to the alternating dry cycle, which could improve nutrient absorption and resistance to environmental stress. After 15 gas samplings, initial analysis results showed that the amount of CH4 emitted from the AWD field was significantly reduced compared to the control field, thanks to the limitation of anaerobic decomposition in the soil. It is expected that the experimental field will generate about 4-6 Carbon credits, equivalent to a reduction of 4-6 tons of CO2.
Overview of the workshop.
With the initial results, it can be seen that the AWD method is effective in reducing CH4 emissions, opening up a new direction for sustainable rice production in Thanh Hoa. To promote this potential, Thanh Hoa Agricultural Institute wishes to continue to cooperate with Feager Vietnam Company to expand the scale of phase 2 experiment to 20 hectares in the 2025 crop season, in order to collect more data on productivity and emissions to create Carbon certificates. At the same time, complete the evaluation process and report to provide a scientific basis for management agencies and partners.
Delegates at the conference.
Speaking at the workshop, representatives of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the Department of Irrigation, and Feager Vietnam Company introduced opportunities, potentials, and production orientations to reduce emissions towards green growth in Thanh Hoa province; the current situation, difficulties, and opportunities in irrigation and drainage management for rice fields in Thanh Hoa; the potential to participate in the wet-dry irrigation project from the perspective of irrigation management; introduced investment, support, and wet-dry irrigation solutions, measurement, reporting, verification processes, plans, and project development strategies in the province; and applied techniques to increase rice yields while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, delegates discussed the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of the AWD project in Thanh Hoa.
Also at the workshop, Faeger Company signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with Vinh Yen and Vinh Quang Cooperatives (Vinh Loc) on a rice production program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
