Enhancing transportation connectivity

As the central hub of the Central Vietnam economic zone, Da Nang not only needs a modern inner-city transportation network but also requires the creation of strong connecting arteries between the coastal plain and the western mountainous region.

Connecting East-West infrastructure axis

After merging with Quang Nam province, Da Nang has many advantages and potentials for development, especially with its position as the "gateway" from Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands to the East Sea. Da Nang is focusing its efforts on key infrastructure projects to expand its development space and bridge the gap in logistics, tourism , and industry.

Currently, Da Nang has national and provincial roads that serve as the "backbone" connecting the plains with the mountainous regions and further afield to the Central Highlands, Laos, and Thailand, such as National Highway 14B, National Highway 14E, National Highway 14D, National Highway 14G, National Highway 40B, the eastern branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway, and the La Son - Tuy Loan Expressway...

Besides the national highways currently under construction, many other national and provincial roads are in a state of disrepair, affecting traffic capacity and posing a risk of traffic accidents. Therefore, the city needs to expedite the implementation of these vital transportation projects.

For example, the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 14E, the section passing through Da Nang city, is a key project connecting the sea to the border, with a total investment of over 1,848 billion VND, and is being accelerated in its construction progress.

According to Project Management Board 4 (the investor), the project has a total length of over 71km and plays a very important role as it connects the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone and the Dung Quat Economic Zone (Quang Ngai) with neighboring Laos through the Nam Giang international border gate and vice versa. It also connects National Highway 1A with the Ho Chi Minh Highway to the Central Highlands.

The project management board is coordinating with local authorities and relevant units to expedite land clearance; at the same time, the construction unit has mobilized more than 220 workers, 55 engineers, along with equipment and machinery to work on the entire route.

In addition, the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 14B, a vital artery connecting Da Nang city with the Central Highlands provinces, is underway. Specifically, the section from the Tuy Loan intersection to the border with Dai Loc commune is being upgraded and expanded to six lanes, with progress being accelerated before the rainy season.

One of the projects that is also attracting public attention is the National Highway 14D upgrade project. Recently, the Prime Minister issued a decision allocating an additional 500 billion VND to the city to commence the project.

Reportedly, the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 14D has a total estimated investment of 4,518 billion VND; it is a Class III mountain road, starting from Ben Giang (formerly Nam Giang district) intersecting with the Ho Chi Minh Highway, and ending at the Nam Giang International Border Gate connecting to Laos, with a total actual length of approximately 74.4 km.

National Highway 14D plays a particularly important role in the socio-economic development strategy of the Central Vietnam economic zone, connecting it with Northeast Thailand and Southern Laos, and is the only route to the high mountainous region and the western border.

In addition, the city has many national highways that need to be invested in, upgraded, and expanded soon, such as National Highway 40B, which is over 209km long, starting from the coastal road of Tam Thanh to Tu Mo Rong and Ngoc Hoi (Quang Ngai).

In addition, National Highway 14G, with a length of 66km connecting the former Hoa Vang district with the former Dong Giang district, is a Class IV road with 2 lanes and a cross-section width of 7.5m. Recently, the Vietnam Road Administration has only invested in 4 bridges to eliminate dangerous submerged bridges during the rainy season and upgraded 5km of road surface along the route, so further investment is needed soon…

Currently, one project nearing completion and scheduled to open its main route on August 19th is the new Hoa Lien - Tuy Loan Expressway Project, with a total investment of over 2,100 billion VND, which is in the final stages of completion…

Transportation will be a driving force for development.

In addition to prioritizing the expansion and development of transportation routes for high-volume freight along the East-West connecting corridor, the city will also expand its connections with North-South routes in the near future.

This will create a crucial regional transportation network linking the plains to the mountainous areas, seamlessly connecting the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, the High-Tech Park, the Hoa Khanh Industrial Park, Hoa Cam Industrial Park, etc., with the Nam Giang International Border Gate Economic Zone and the Central Highlands region. The city's planning has proposed various transportation infrastructure development options to address bottlenecks and promote socio-economic development in the coming period.

In the draft political report of the City Party Committee's Executive Committee, 22nd term, presented to the 23rd Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term, one of the seven tasks and solutions outlined is to effectively implement planning and develop a harmonious socio-economic space between urban, rural, and mountainous areas. The city prioritizes the completion and upgrading of key road networks connecting the East and West regions, linking the center of Da Nang with wards and communes, especially in mountainous areas.

Da Nang will also coordinate the proposal to invest in the Da Nang - Thanh My - Ngoc Hoi - Bo Y expressway; and expand the eastern section of the North-South expressway from La Son to Hoa Lien.

In addition, Da Nang is promoting the implementation of several urban railway lines (LRT and MRT models) connecting with Hoi An Dong, Quang Phu, Chu Lai, etc.

Along with that, there will be investment in developing a synchronous and modern infrastructure; effectively utilizing resources to accelerate the progress of key projects in the 2025-2030 period. These include developing Lien Chieu Port into an international gateway port; expanding the capacity of Da Nang International Airport and developing Chu Lai Airport to international standards; dredging the Co Co and Truong Giang rivers; and a branch railway connecting to Lien Chieu Port.

If these solutions are implemented synchronously, Da Nang will form a solid "two-way" transportation network: from the coastal plain to the mountainous Central Highlands and vice versa, closely linking the socio-economic development of the entire region. This is both an infrastructure issue and a "key" for Da Nang to leverage its role as a regional center, achieving breakthrough development while ensuring strategic security in the Central and Central Highlands regions.
