The scenarios in the simulation section did not accurately reflect real traffic conditions and contained elements of trick questions.
The Ministry of Public Security has proposed eliminating the simulated traffic situations in the driver's license test, replacing it with only three parts: theory, practical driving on a course, and practical driving on the road. This aims to simplify procedures, reduce burdens, and increase the practicality for learners. The main reason is that the simulated test is currently considered by many to lack practicality, with situations designed to trick candidates instead of assessing real-world driving skills. This proposal is currently under public consultation and has received support from many citizens.
After completing the theoretical and practical exams, Ms. Xuan (from Bac Ninh province) felt quite stressed when entering the simulation exam, as this part of the exam had failed many students. Despite her best efforts, she still failed the simulation exam.
Many argue that the simulation section of the driving test has not adequately met the requirements for candidates, even creating additional technical pressure by requiring candidates to learn "tricks" rather than practice handling real-life situations. Furthermore, the scenarios in the simulations do not accurately reflect real traffic conditions and contain elements of trick questions. Therefore, many driving schools have agreed with the proposal to eliminate the simulation section of the test.
Mr. Nguyen Van Bay (practical instructor, Dong Do Driving School and Testing Center) said: "The simulation part of the test lacks realism, because in a situation, it's safer to handle it beforehand than afterward. In the software, handling it beforehand doesn't earn points, while handling it afterward does. I find that illogical."
"The content of the driving test and the simulation of traffic situations are not suitable for the actual traffic situation in Vietnam, complicating the testing process and increasing unnecessary costs, and not clearly reflecting the driving ability of the test takers," commented Lieutenant Colonel Ta Thi Hong Minh (Deputy Head of the Training, Testing, and Licensing Management Department, Traffic Police Department).
Eliminating the driving simulator test will save test-takers time and effort. The test should focus on the theory and practical driving skills of the candidate. These are the factors that truly reflect the candidate's abilities and determine the quality of their driving.
