'Red Address' - 'Witness' of history, arousing patriotism

April 30th is not only an occasion to review the great victory of the nation but also a reminder of the countless sacrifices and hardships that generations of fathers and brothers have gone through to regain independence and freedom. On the land of Long An, "brave and resilient", there are still many "red addresses" that mark a glorious time of resistance against the US. Today, these places have become meaningful destinations in the journey of educating revolutionary traditions, helping the younger generation understand more about the past to appreciate the present and live responsibly for the future.

Today, Muong Tram communal house (Hamlet 5, Thanh Loi commune, Ben Luc district) has become a "red address" contributingto educating the revolutionary tradition for the young generation.

The history of "sweeping" resounded in Thanh Loi land

Nestled along the Vam Co Dong River in Hamlet 5, Thanh Loi Commune, Ben Luc District, Muong Tram Communal House is the place that marks the resounding victory of the army and people of Long An in the resistance war against the US to save the country. At that time, Thanh Loi Commune was a liberated zone but was located close to the enemy's military base, so it was often swept and bombarded. With a terrain of crisscrossing rivers and canals, this was an important gateway on the strategic corridor, where we both protected the liberated zone and proactively organized counterattacks.

On April 27, 1964, in this area, the 1st Battalion of Long An, the 2nd Company of Doc Lap and the army and people of Thanh Loi commune destroyed the 38th Battalion of the puppet army - the most elite and brutal unit of the enemy known as the "Black Panther". The battle took place in the context of the US - puppet forces promoting the "Key Pacification" strategy to send troops to sweep into the liberated area. The enemy used more than 40 helicopters to land troops on Thanh Loi field but faced fierce counterattacks. With a three-pronged attack, in just a few hours, our army shot down 3 helicopters, killed and injured nearly 250 enemies, and captured many weapons and ammunition.

The victory at Muong Tram was the first battle to defeat the enemy's "helicopter transport" tactic in Long An. This was also a turning point from "fighting sweeps" to actively "fighting sweeps", opening the way for a series of victories later. The close coordination between the main force, the guerrilla force, departments, branches and organizations of Thanh Loi commune created a combined strength, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity of our army and people.

Today, on the old foundation of the communal house, the Martyrs Memorial Temple and Muong Tram Victory Stele have been built. This is not only a place to remember a glorious victory but also a place to educate profound traditions for the young generation of Long An today.

Secretary of Thanh Loi Commune Youth Union, Ben Luc District - Nguyen Van Hai said: "Thanh Loi Commune Youth Union regularly organizes a journey to the source at Muong Tram communal house with activities such as offering incense in memory, cleaning the relic site, participating in traditional activities, recruiting new members, etc. These activities help members review the heroic history of their homeland and foster patriotism. In addition, they also help young people become more attached to and proud of the local revolutionary tradition."

Participating in the source trip at Muong Tram communal house, I felt extremely moved and proud. I realized that this place is not only a historical relic but also a sacred symbol of patriotism and the great sacrifice of many generations of ancestors. The trip helped me to be more grateful and appreciate historical values. I am determined to study and practice to contribute to building my homeland to be more and more beautiful."

Go Gon - "red address" for revolutionary tradition education

Students visit the "red address" of Go Gon historical relic site (Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district)

Go Gon historical relic site (Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district) is not only a place marking the heroic feats of our army and people in the resistance war against the US to save the country, but also a familiar destination in traditional education activities, returning to the roots of local union members and young people.

Go Gon is associated with the resounding victories of the army and people of Dong Thap Muoi in the early stages of the Dong Khoi movement (1960-1961). During the resistance years, Go Gon belonged to Region 8 of Kien Tuong province. At that time, Kien Tuong Provincial Party Committee advocated coordinating with main units to destroy security forces, militia, liberate bases and eliminate landlords in the area, together with the people to destroy the enemy's gathering areas to gain control of the bases.

The Battle of Go Gon on February 3, 1960 was one of the typical battles, with more than 90 officers and soldiers from units 402, 408 and local guerrillas participating. After 3 hours of fierce fighting, our troops killed 50 enemies, wounded 70, and captured 21, including the enemy battalion commander. Our troops confiscated 39 more guns, 5 PRC.1 communication devices, and guerrillas and people later picked up hundreds of guns of various types in Go Gon. This battle completely destroyed the main force battalion of the puppet army, the Black Eagle, and the security company of the Tuyen Binh army.

This was the first large-scale victory in this region, opening the way for the Dong Khoi movement to spread throughout the region, contributing to the bankruptcy of the "One-sided War" strategy of the US - puppet. The victory of Go Gon from here marked the glorious feat of the people of Kien Tuong province in general and Dong Thap Muoi in particular, contributing to the heroic struggle history of Long An province during the resistance war against the US, unifying the country.

With great historical significance, the Provincial People's Committee decided to rank Go Gon as a historical relic in 1997. Since 2003, Tan Hung district authorities have invested funds to build the Go Gon Victory Monument. In 2012, they continued to renovate and build the Go Gon historical relic site in Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district, with a total cost of 13 billion VND. On January 20, 2022, the District Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Tan Hung district held the inauguration ceremony of the Go Gon historical relic site, officially putting it into operation. Since then, this place has become a familiar destination in the journey of traditional education for the younger generation.

Tan Hung High School Youth Union (Tan Hung District) held a ceremony to admit new members at Go Gon Historical Site.

To preserve and promote the value of the relic site, the government and the Youth Union of Hung Thanh commune actively organize practical activities such as cleaning the landscape, planting and caring for trees, and ensuring security of the campus. On major holidays, volunteer Saturdays, Green Sundays, etc., union members and youth all participate in the campaign, creating a close and lively image for the relic site.

In particular, on October 10, 2024, the Go Gon Historical Relics Digitalization Project was officially put into use. The project is equipped with QR codes integrating historical information, architecture, and maps, helping union members, youth, students, residents, and tourists easily access and learn about the relic. This is not only a step forward in digital transformation in the cultural field, but also demonstrates the creativity and sense of responsibility of young people in preserving and spreading historical values to the community.

“We chose Go Gon as the place to recruit new members and organize propaganda activities about the traditions of our homeland to educate the ideals of union members and young people. Every young person after visiting and learning becomes a propagandist about local history” - Secretary of the Hung Thanh Commune Youth Union - Ngan Minh Thuan said.

Go Gon - an ancient feat, a relic today continues to revive through each trip back to the source, each step of the TN and in the traditional flow of the brave and resilient homeland of Long An.

Amidst the modern pace of life, the “red addresses” in Long An still quietly “tell” about a fiery time, reminding today’s generation of the great sacrifice for national independence. Preserving and promoting the value of historical relics not only demonstrates the morality of “When drinking water, remember its source” but also contributes to fostering revolutionary ideals, patriotism and responsibility for the homeland and country for the young generation./.
