For 5 consecutive years (from 2021 to 2025), Supe Lam Thao has continuously launched new products. That shows that Supe Lam Thao has constantly innovated, applied science and technology to create new fertilizer products to contribute to the development of organic agriculture , sustainable agriculture and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr. Phung Ha, Chairman of the Vietnam Fertilizer Association, made this assessment when talking to Dan Viet reporter about the fertilizer market and the strong innovation of enterprises, including Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company (Supe Lam Thao) - the leading fertilizer enterprise in the country.

Sir, in 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development approved the Project on developing the production and use of organic fertilizers until 2030, with a vision to 2050. In your opinion, how does this Project affect our country's fertilizer market?

- Regarding policies and legal documents related to the fertilizer industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has approved 02 important projects.

One is the Project on Development of Production and Use of Organic Fertilizers to 2030, with a vision to 2050 in Decision No. 5190/QD-BNN-BVTV, dated December 7, 2023. This project sets specific goals by 2030: Increase the proportion of organic fertilizer products permitted for circulation to over 30% of the total number of fertilizer products; Increase the organic fertilizer production capacity of qualified production facilities to 5 million tons/year; The amount of industrial organic fertilizer used accounts for at least 30% of the total amount of fertilizer used in agricultural production.

Second is the Project "Improving soil health and plant nutrition management to 2030, vision to 2030, vision to 2050", in Decision No. 3458/QD-BNN-BVTV dated October 11, 2024.

In particular, the project sets out the goals for 2030 related to fertilizers: Building and perfecting a reasonable cultivation process associated with effective fertilizer use, reducing nutrient loss on major soil types for growing key crops; Developing new fertilizer production technology (inorganic, organic, biological) domestically and imported with high efficiency; Building and perfecting appropriate and effective fertilizer use processes that meet the principles of "right soil type, right plant type, right dosage, right time, right way", contributing to reducing the loss of macronutrient fertilizers by at least 0.5 percent/year on major soil types for growing key crops by 2030.

If the above two projects are implemented synchronously and according to plan, the functional units of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, enterprises, and industry associations implement solutions on policy mechanisms, science and technology, agricultural extension, training, information, propaganda, digital transformation, international cooperation, inspection, examination, monitoring and evaluation, which will have a strong impact on the fertilizer use mechanism, on the development of organic fertilizers, microbial fertilizers, and reduce the excessive use of inorganic fertilizers.

In recent years, more than 20 fertilizer production and trading enterprises such as Que Lam Group, Song Gianh Corporation, Thien Sinh Joint Stock Company, Saigon Mekong Company, PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemicals Corporation, Ca Mau Petroleum Fertilizer Company, etc. have committed to accompany the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in increasing the production and use of organic fertilizers in agricultural production, building model models; guiding farmers to use fertilizers economically, balanced and effectively; guiding fertilizer dealers to trade in accordance with regulations, etc.

Many organic fertilizer factories have invested in modern, large-scale production lines, allowing the creation of good, stable quality organic fertilizers, using more effectively available raw materials such as organic waste from livestock, farming, aquaculture, processing industry, household waste and organic substances in nature.

Lam Thao Microbial Superphosphate was launched to the market by Lam Thao Superphosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company in 2023.

How do you evaluate the potential for developing organic fertilizers and microbial fertilizers?

- Regarding local potential, policy projects will contribute to promoting the development of organic fertilizer production on a household scale: There are nearly 20 million tons of organic fertilizer produced on a household scale from by-products of crops, livestock, aquaculture, etc. used in agricultural production.

Developing organic fertilizer production based on livestock waste: According to statistics, Vietnam currently has nearly 3 million households and pig farms. Of which, large-scale pig farming (over 300 pigs) accounts for only 0.17%, while small-scale farming households (under 9 pigs) account for 83.16%.

Developing organic fertilizer production based on crop by-products: Crop by-products can be used as compost material for fruit trees, long-term industrial crops, and vegetables; produced into fuel bars and biochar...

Increase organic fertilizer sources through intercropping and crop rotation with green manure and legume crops; produce organic fertilizer from household waste; produce manure.

In recent years, a number of enterprises, including Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company, have continuously launched new generation fertilizer products, providing "green farming" solutions for agricultural production such as microbial superphosphate, microbial organic fertilizer, urban agricultural fertilizer... What is your assessment of this investment by Lam Thao Super Phosphate?

- In recent years, especially in 2024, Vietnam's agricultural sector has achieved remarkable achievements, affirming its pivotal role in the economy and improving the quality of life of rural people. Particularly for the crop sector, despite facing many challenges, especially being severely affected by storm No. 3 Yagi, the end of 2024 still recorded many outstanding achievements, especially in the export of key products such as fruits, rice, coffee and cashew nuts.

Specifically, for rice, exports reached a record of 9 million tons, with a turnover of 5.8 billion USD; fruit exports set a record of 7 billion USD, of which durian reached 3.2 billion USD. Fertilizers play an important role in the development of the crop industry, because fertilizers are one of the most important inputs in agriculture (according to FAO: fertilizers are responsible for about 40-60% of world food production, depending on the type of crop, weather and season, fertilizers account for 40-70% of the value of input materials).

To meet the increasing demand for crop yield and quality, businesses have researched and produced a number of new generation fertilizers, fertilizers with high scientific and technological content, typically high efficiency fertilizers (Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer - EEF). Accordingly, EEF is a newer fertilizer formula that helps control fertilizer release to reduce nutrient loss to the environment and increase the ability to provide nutrients to crops. In addition, there are also multi-purpose fertilizers, organic fertilizers, and microbial fertilizers.

For 5 consecutive years from 2021 to 2025, Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company has continuously launched new products. Specifically, in 2021, it will be a set of 5 new generation high-content NPK-S products; in 2022, it will be a group of Microbial Superphosphate; in 2023, it will be Microbial NPK-S and Microbial Organic Minerals; in 2024, it will be specialized fertilizers for coffee trees, forestry trees and urban agriculture.

This year, the company continues to launch the NPK-S product line using 100% potassium sulfate and neutral superphosphate, meeting the needs of sustainable farming and green agriculture.

Talking a little about the new product of Lam Thao Super Company in 2025, instead of using MOP (KCl), the company has initially used SOP (K2SO4). SOP has the advantage of having both macronutrients (K) and medium nutrients (S) and at the same time reducing the amount of Cl- ions introduced into the soil.

This proves that Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company has constantly innovated, applying science and technology to create new products associated with the development trend of organic agriculture, sustainable agriculture and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

After a long time of chasing output, Vietnamese agriculture has almost "exhausted" land and water resources, leading to land degradation and desertification in many places... In your opinion, how meaningful are new fertilizer solutions like those of Supe Lam Thao in protecting land resources, reducing the amount of fertilizer used while still ensuring the nutritional needs of crops?

- The widespread and excessive use of chemical fertilizers over a long period of time has caused agricultural land to become increasingly barren and seriously degraded.

FAO statistics show that on average, people in the world use about 135 kg of chemical fertilizers/ha, while in our country it is up to over 400 kg/ha (2020 data). Increasing the use of organic fertilizers, microbial fertilizers, and high-efficiency fertilizers will partly overcome the above situation.

The fertilizers that Lam Thao Super Phosphate and Chemical Joint Stock Company has introduced to the market in recent years will contribute to reducing the amount of fertilizer, improving soil health and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

The reason why we can say that is because: Plants easily absorb macronutrients, medium and micronutrients in organic fertilizers because the decomposition and absorption process occurs over a long period of time, without encountering excess; Organic fertilizers have the ability to increase beneficial microorganisms for plants; Organic fertilizers have the ability to decompose into many organic acids to stimulate root growth, when used as foliar fertilizers, it will enhance the photosynthetic ability of plants.

In addition, organic fertilizers also play an important role in improving and limiting soil erosion; improving the quality of agricultural products. The biggest advantage of organic fertilizers is that they are environmentally friendly due to their ability to decompose completely in the natural environment.

Our country's agricultural sector is shifting strongly towards green production, reducing emissions, aiming towards the goal of Net Zero by 2050. In your opinion, how should fertilizer businesses be aware of and act in the face of this trend to contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture?

- Climate change (CC) negatively impacts Vietnam's agriculture, especially the crop growing industry, reducing the area of cultivated land, causing drought and pests.

Agriculture is affected by climate change, but agriculture is the second largest greenhouse gas emitter after the energy sector, negatively affecting climate change, mainly in the fields of rice cultivation, animal husbandry, land management and the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

Global agricultural yields would fall by 50% without fertilizer use, while about 2.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions are associated with fertilizers. Greenhouse gas emissions can arise from both production and use.

In order to achieve the Net Zero target by 2050 as committed by the Government, fertilizer enterprises must first take measures to significantly reduce carbon emissions in production and continuously strive to improve energy efficiency. Second, research and apply EEF fertilizers and low emission fertilizers.

When using fertilizers, it is necessary to apply the 4Rs initiative in fertilizer management: Right source, right rate, right time, right place; Manage crop nutrition, promote better combination of locally available organic fertilizer sources such as manure and compost with mineral fertilizers;

Apply the method of using minimum dosage, or increase the use of EEF fertilizers to achieve the purpose of increasing fertilizer absorption by crops, while reducing environmental impact;

Increase the use of organic fertilizers and microbial fertilizers; Use fertilizer additives to cope with climate change such as calcium (Ca) to strengthen cell walls, help plants become stronger, desalinate, inhibit the growth of fungi in the soil, silicon is essential for plants when they are saline, prevent water evaporation in plants, improve many physiological and biochemical mechanisms of plants, help plants reproduce healthily in saline soil conditions; Use nitrogen stabilizers (Nitrogen Stabilizer), urease inhibitors (Urease Inhibitor), nitrification inhibitors (Nitrification Inhibitor), urease enzyme inhibitors (UI).

Thank you very much!
