Nearly 70% of 3,000 employers prioritize candidates' experience, and new graduates need to equip themselves with this if they want to compete with older employees.
At the Job Fair organized by Hanoi University on December 15, Mr. Nguyen Bao Long, Head of Community Development and Partnerships, TopCV Vietnam Company, said that every year, the company interviews about 3,000 employers to see what their needs are.
According to the 2022 recruitment market report and 2023 needs, what businesses care most about in a candidate's CV (job application) is practical experience, accounting for 69.4%. Soft skills are the second most important factor, with 54.1% of employers choosing them. The candidate's education ranks third, with 33.3%.
According to Mr. Long, in 2022, employers reserved 20% of their quota for new graduates, but this year it is only 10%.
"Companies increasingly prioritize recruiting experienced personnel," said Mr. Long. He explained that in difficult economic times , businesses must optimize costs, and recruiting experienced personnel helps them save on training.

In addition, experienced staff are willing to reduce their salaries to compete with new graduates, according to Mr. Long. Therefore, students are forced to accumulate experience because that is the standard set by employers and is increasingly improved.
"If you cultivate and accumulate work experience, that will be your strength in your CV," said Mr. Long.
He advised students Students should value their internships more because this is a time to accumulate work experience and add it to their CV. In addition, students should also be financially independent by doing part-time jobs, such as working as a sales person. This job may seem unrelated to their major, but it is an opportunity for students to observe how businesses operate and make money, and then apply it to their future real-life jobs.
When asked how to impress employers without high grades and work experience, Mr. Long said there is "no shortcut" other than self-improvement of skills and knowledge. Students can take some specialized courses or courses in communication skills, office computer skills, and foreign languages to increase their chances.
"Companies really like employees who can learn on their own and are proactive. If they start out empty-handed, they will have almost no chance of competing with their seniors," said Mr. Long.
