The project to increase the capacity of the Hoa Binh 500kV substation has been energized.

The National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) and the Power Transmission Project Management Board (NPTPMB), in coordination with relevant units, have successfully energized the Hoa Binh 500kV Substation capacity upgrade project.

The Hoa Binh 500kV substation capacity upgrade project is a special-grade, Group B energy project, with EVNNPT as the investor; the Power Transmission Project Management Board manages and operates the project on behalf of the investor; and Power Transmission Company 1 takes over operation. The project is implemented at the existing Hoa Binh 500kV substation, located in Tan Thinh ward, Hoa Binh city, Hoa Binh province (formerly), now Hoa Binh ward, Phu Tho province.

The project involves replacing the two existing 500/220/35kV-450MVA transformers with two 500/220/35kV-900MVA transformers, increasing the substation's capacity by 900MVA and raising the total substation capacity to 1,800MVA.

Phase 1 involves replacing transformer AT2 from 450MVA to 900MVA; Phase 2 involves replacing transformer AT1 from 450MVA to 900MVA, expected to be completed in the next phase.

Given that the 450MVA transformers at the 500kV Hoa Binh substation are often overloaded, increasing the capacity of the 500kV Hoa Binh substation will contribute to ensuring safe operation and enhancing the power transmission capacity from large and small hydropower sources in the Northwest region. This will ensure stable power supply to Phu Tho province, Hanoi , and other northern provinces, especially in the context of increasing load demand. This is an urgent project, playing a crucial role in ensuring national energy security.

According to the Power Transmission Project Management Board, the project's construction faced many challenges due to cramped working conditions; equipment at the Hoa Binh 500kV substation was energized; and hydropower plants in the area were operating at maximum capacity to optimize costs, making it difficult to schedule power outages. However, with the close guidance of EVNNPT, the support of dispatching levels, Power Transmission Company 1, and the Hoa Binh Power Transmission Team, the AT2 transformer at the Hoa Binh 500kV substation was successfully upgraded.
