Supporting disadvantaged students

Amidst the hardships of Tra Giap commune, the "Party members accompanying disadvantaged students" model is not only a skillful way of mobilizing the people, but also a beautiful story about the responsibility of party members and the aspiration to keep highland students engaged in literacy.

Closely observing each situation

The muddy, red dirt road leading to the hamlets and villages of Tra Giap commune still bears the scars of the recent floods. Along that road, the figures of Principal Phan Duy Bien and the Party members and teachers of Vo Thi Sau Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School regularly appear before the small house of Dinh Bao Tram (a 4th-grade student).

“Tram is an orphan, so life is very difficult for her. Every month, we set aside a little of our salary, sometimes to buy clothes, sometimes a little rice, a box of instant noodles… mainly to encourage her, to let her know she’s not alone in this mountainous region,” Mr. Bien said, his voice hoarse in the cold mountain air.

The story of Bảo Trâm is just one of dozens of cases that the Party Branch of Võ Thị Sáu Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School has supported over the past two years. The effective grassroots mobilization model, "Party members accompanying disadvantaged students," was implemented at the beginning of 2024, starting with 16 Party members helping 8 students in the most difficult circumstances. Each student has two to three Party members caring for them, acting like family members always by their side to provide timely support.

These aren't gifts given only during holidays or on a regular basis; the "Party members accompanying disadvantaged students" model requires regular, timely, and appropriate support to meet their needs.

A new pair of sandals so students don't have to miss school because of cracked feet; a notebook, a set of clothes, a can of rice, or a bottle of cooking oil hastily bought with the teachers' salaries; or home visits to encourage parents and persuade them to keep their children in school. As teacher Chau Thi Hoang Long said: "Whatever is lacking, whatever is needed, we support it immediately within our means. As long as the children don't drop out of school."

The effectiveness of the model is not measured by numbers, but by lasting change: 100% of students receive dedicated support, become more confident, and dropout rates have been eliminated.

Many Co and Ca Dong families, who were previously hesitant to send their children to school, now trust and rely on the teachers, seeing them as a source of support. To date, the model has spread widely, with all 19 Party members of the school's Party branch voluntarily participating, considering it their duty. As a result, 9 of the most disadvantaged students have been selected to receive support.

Thanks to the connections made by their teachers, two Co ethnic minority students, Nguyen Thi Dang (7th grade) and Nguyen Thi Tuyet Vy (8th grade), recently received laptops from their sister ward, Ban Thach, to help with their studies. Dang, an orphan who lost both parents, choked up with emotion upon receiving the computer: "This is a dream gift, I never thought I would have one."

Efforts for the benefit of students

To implement the "Party members accompanying disadvantaged students" model, the role of the Party Branch Secretary and Principal Phan Duy Bien is crucial.

Mr. Hoang Thanh Long, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tra Giap commune, assessed that Mr. Bien is "a model Party member, someone who transforms compassion into concrete action, always closely monitoring the circumstances of each student." On the eve of this year's Vietnamese Teachers' Day (November 20th), Mr. Bien was honored to be appointed by the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee to the Executive Committee of the Tra Giap Commune Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term, a well-deserved recognition for a teacher who has tirelessly strived for the students in the highlands.

In early 2025, the "Party members accompanying disadvantaged students" model of the Party Branch of Vo Thi Sau Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School was also recognized by the Bac Tra My District Party Committee (formerly Quang Nam province) as a typical model of effective mass mobilization at the district level in 2024 and was commended and rewarded. This is well-deserved recognition, affirming the value of a humane and practical model.

Tra Giap is a particularly disadvantaged mountainous commune. Following the recent natural disaster, many houses, rice paddies, and irrigation dams were severely damaged; the livelihoods of the local ethnic minority people are facing many difficulties.

The school currently has about 70 students from disadvantaged backgrounds, while the support model can only assist the 9 most needy students. "Finding a well-off family is difficult, but there are many poor families in Tra Giap. Therefore, even with our best efforts, we can only share a small portion of the burden, and we desperately need more support from society," said Mr. Bien.
