Germany's domestic intelligence agency (BfV) has set up a task force to prevent foreign interference in the upcoming federal election.

The move comes after the BfV issued a warning in October about Russian-backed espionage activities.

The BfV also predicts possible acts of disinformation, cyberattacks, espionage or sabotage ahead of the early elections on February 23, 2025.

The election was held after the three-party coalition led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed in early November 2024.

The agency also asserted that Russia is “intensifying” cyber attacks, especially “hacking and leaking” campaigns, and using artificial intelligence to produce deepfake videos to deceive voters.

Pro-Russian parties such as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the far-left coalition Sahra Wagenknecht are gaining popularity, especially in elections in the east of the country in September 2024.
