FrieslandCampina's ultimate mission is to Nourish - to provide high-quality nutrition to an increasingly populous planet in an affordable and accessible way, and to do so in a way that maximises positive impact while minimising and eventually eliminating any negative impact on the environment. This is the main objective of the group's sustainability strategy.
In Vietnam, the group’s Sustainability activities focus on four pillars: (1) better, affordable nutrition for all; (2) reducing CO2 emissions in production and business activities; (3) recycling packaging and moving towards a circular economy ; and (4) caring for farmers’ lives and creating better supply chains. The company focuses on areas where it can make a real impact, which is why the group has aligned the United Nations’ 8 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with its priorities.
Since 2010, FrieslandCampina Research Institute has cooperated with the National Institute of Nutrition and prestigious research agencies in Southeast Asia to periodically survey the nutritional status of children in the region to propose solutions to improve nutrition through various activities.
Vietnam is the 15th most populous country in the world, but Vietnamese children are among the 20 most stunted. This physical difference comes from many reasons, including unbalanced nutritional habits and a lack of suitable nutritional supplements, for which drinking milk can be considered an effective solution. Milk is the most consumed globally, more than rice, meat, fish, and vegetables, but paradoxically, this nutritional product is consumed very little in Vietnam, with Vietnamese people drinking only 28 liters of milk per year (2022) - equal to half of Asia, one-sixth of Europe, and one-eighth of North America, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
In 2020, FrieslandCampina Vietnam strategically cooperated with the Ministry of Education and Training to implement a nutrition education program for primary school children. This program aims to help Vietnamese children understand nutrition and choose healthy sources of nutrition for themselves.
In addition to its focus on nutrition, the company has been working on sustainability since long before it became a buzzword. FrieslandCampina was one of the first companies in the dairy industry to build a large-scale carbon footprint monitoring system, which allows farmers to predict the total sustainability impact of their farms as it calculates the overall impact of sustainability measures such as reducing CO₂ emissions or improving biodiversity.
In the context of many economic challenges, FrieslandCampina Vietnam is still persistent on the journey of sustainable development with the mission 'For a Vietnam to rise high and excel'.
