On July 22, on the Korean online community theqoo, two posts related to the Kpop girl group (G)I-DLE (consisting of 5 members Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, Shuhua) wearing performance costumes with the Red Cross symbol became a hot topic.
The posts have each attracted more than 70,000 reads and more than 500 comments.
In the recent KBS music show Music Bank, group (G)I-DLE wore performance outfits similar to the uniforms of rescue workers of the Korean Red Cross.
According to media reports, in Korea, the use of the Red Cross emblem is protected by law. According to Article 25 of the Korean Red Cross Act, the emblem cannot be used without the approval of the Korean Red Cross Society.
A representative of the Korean Red Cross Society stated on July 22 in a call with Dispatch that they have not received any requests for approval to use the Red Cross symbol from Kpop management companies or production companies.
However, this official believes that (G)I-DLE's misuse was due to ignorance and not intentional.
Intentional or frequent use of the Red Cross emblem without permission may result in administrative penalties from the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The Korean Red Cross plans to send an official notice to Cube Entertainment, informing them of relevant laws and requesting measures to prevent recurrence.
On the evening of July 22, Cube Entertainment informed Dispatch that they were aware of (G)I-DLE's controversial performance outfits and contacted the Korean Red Cross to apologize.
Cube promises to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
