Coffee prices have been volatile recently due to many factors such as demand, weather, exports, policies and global markets. In October, Vietnam started its coffee harvest season, which helped to ease the coffee price fever and reduce prices in the market.
Coffee output is expected to fall sharply in the 2024-2025 crop year to its lowest level in 13 years in Vietnam, mainly due to unfavorable weather and the El Nino phenomenon causing drought and pests.
This could boost coffee prices in the long term, but for now the market remains quiet as traders await supplies from the new harvest. Rains are expected to return to southeastern Brazil, improving conditions for coffee trees, which could ease upward pressure on prices in the future.
World coffee prices today
At the end of the most recent trading session, the price of Robusta coffee in London for November 2024 delivery decreased by 164 USD/ton, at 4,903 USD/ton, and for January 2025 delivery decreased by 170 USD/ton, at 4,689 USD/ton.
Arabica coffee prices for December 2024 delivery decreased by 12.25 cents/lb to 245.10 cents/lb, and for March 2025 delivery decreased by 11.95 cents/lb to 243.70 cents/lb.
The European Commission has proposed postponing the application of the EU Anti-Deforestation Regulation by 12 months, which could help balance coffee supply and demand as European importers reduce imports.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a stronger US dollar have depressed international coffee prices. A strike on the US East Coast port has been resolved, helping to reduce coffee prices.
The downward pressure on coffee prices remains and can cause unpredictable fluctuations. Coffee growers need to closely monitor the market to sell at the right time, while coffee traders need to have flexible stocks to avoid the risk of price fluctuations.
