Vegetable prices increased sharply after floods

QTO - The market for green vegetables and fruits has recently become less diverse and abundant due to the heavy impact of floods. The supply of vegetables has decreased, prices have increased, and buying foods that are often present in Vietnamese meals has become more difficult for housewives.

Green vegetables increase in price

For the past two weeks, the meals of Ms. Trinh Thi Khanh Huyen's family in Nam Trach commune seem to lack dishes made from vegetables and tubers. The reason is that the recent prolonged rain and flood has damaged many vegetable gardens in the area. The supply has become scarce, the price of vegetables and tubers is "more expensive than fresh shrimp".

“My family maintains the habit of eating clean vegetables to supplement fiber for family members, so every time I go to the market, I always stop by the vegetable stall first. But since the past few days, due to the impact of floods, green vegetables have become more expensive and are not as diverse as before,” said Ms. Huyen. The high price of vegetables has also made Ms. Nguyen Thi Ly, in Hieu Giang commune, consider more carefully each time she goes to the market. “At the market, no stall has increased its price, except for the vegetable stall. Vegetables are more expensive, but there are not many choices,” Ms. Ly complained.

The increase in vegetable prices has not only made it difficult for housewives to choose food, but also for small traders selling vegetables at the local market. According to reporters at some markets in the province, vegetable prices have increased by 20% - 50% compared to normal. Cabbage and Chinese cabbage have increased by 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg.

The prices of some other vegetables have also doubled or even tripled, such as: Cucumber from 20,000 VND/kg increased to 40,000 VND/kg; bitter melon from 15,000-20,000 VND/kg increased to 45,000 VND/kg, sometimes there is not enough stock to sell.

Some leafy green vegetables, such as mustard greens, Malabar spinach, water spinach, spinach, lettuce, must be sold by weight according to consumer demand. The number of customers buying vegetables has decreased significantly. Few people go to the market, some buy a few small bunches of vegetables for temporary use.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien, a vegetable seller at Cam Lo market, shared: “Normally, in addition to vegetables imported from Dong Ha, I also import vegetables from the northern provinces. However, this time the continuous rain and floods have damaged a lot of vegetables, the input price has increased so the selling price has to increase. I also import less quantity, because the vegetables are soaked in the rain, not beautiful, and if I can't sell them all, I have to throw them away. This price increase is difficult for both sellers and buyers.”

Reproduction efforts

While vegetable prices at traditional markets are rising, fortunately, vegetable prices at supermarkets and Winmart stores are almost unchanged. This helps relieve some of the “pressure” for housewives when calculating family meals.

It is known that the supply of vegetables and tubers in these places mostly comes from the southern provinces or has separate growing areas so the quantity of goods is always proactive. However, the variety of vegetables and tubers is not diverse and cannot meet all the needs of local people. Therefore, reproducing in concentrated vegetable growing areas in the area is an urgent issue.

With a total production area of 95 hectares, of which the winter-spring crop has nearly 50 hectares, Dong Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative, Dong Ha Ward is one of the large concentrated vegetable production areas in the whole province. Originally a place to supply vegetables to small traders in and outside the province, due to the impact of recent heavy rains, most of the vegetables here have been damaged; land preparation for production has encountered many difficulties. Although some households have switched to growing vegetables that can grow and develop well in harsh conditions, the vegetable output is not enough to supply the market.

After many rainy days, taking advantage of the dry weather from November 8-15, 2025, members of Dong Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative returned to the garden to plow the land and prepare for re-production.

Cooperative Director Pham Van Quan said: "The Board of Directors of the Cooperative has called on cooperative groups to concentrate resources, organize field clearing, and replant vegetables to promptly meet the needs of local people. In particular, priority is given to planting short-term, fast-rotating vegetable varieties such as lettuce, leafy vegetables... the production atmosphere in the vegetable fields is very busy and bustling."

Similarly, in other large vegetable growing areas such as Ba Don Ward, Nam Gianh Commune..., with the support and encouragement from local authorities, farmers have actively planted and fertilized the land that was flooded to soon become green again.

In addition to providing seeds, technical staff of the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection also provide guidance on planting and care processes, ensuring good plant growth and stable productivity. Hopefully, the weather will be favorable for the vegetable sprouts to grow well, thereby soon stabilizing the market price of vegetables and tubers.
