Introducing metro line 1

Metro Line No. 1 Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien officially came into operation on December 22, 2024, marking a major turning point in Ho Chi Minh City's public transport system.

With a length of nearly 20 km, 14 modern stations, and a travel time of only about 30 minutes, this metro line is not only a fast means of transportation but also an opportunity for you to explore the city in a completely new way.

Now, with Metro Line 1, it only takes 30 minutes to go from Suoi Tien Station to Ben Thanh Station, without worrying about dust or traffic jams. This is the first urban railway line in Ho Chi Minh City, connecting the eastern area with the city center, reducing road traffic and providing a modern, environmentally friendly experience.

For locals, the metro is a time-saving solution. For tourists, it is an opportunity to easily explore famous destinations such as Ben Thanh Market, Landmark 81, or Thao Dien area. Moreover, elevated stations such as Thao Dien or An Phu are also places to check-in for "virtual life" with a panoramic view of the city, especially at sunset.

Metro Line 1 has a total length of 19.7 km, including 2.6 km underground and 17.1 km above ground, with 14 modern stations. Below is the detailed route:

  • City Theater Station (District 1, underground): Near Nguyen Hue walking street, Rex hotel.

  • Tan Cang Station (Binh Thanh, above ground): Near Vinhomes Central Park urban area, Landmark 81.
  • Thao Dien Station (Thu Duc, above): Bustling area with restaurants and cafes.
  • An Phu Station (Thu Duc, above ground): Near Estella Place shopping center.
  • Rach Chiec Station (Thu Duc, elevated): Connecting new residential areas.

  • Binh Thai Station (Thu Duc, elevated): Connecting bus routes.

Travel time for the entire route is only about 30-32 minutes, with train frequency every 8-12 minutes, operating from 5am to 10pm.

Free tickets for: People with revolutionary contributions, people with disabilities, the elderly (60 years old and above), children under 6 years old accompanied by an adult.

How to buy tickets:

  1. Buy at automatic ticket vending machines (POS): Available at all stations, support payment by cash, bank card, or QR code scanning. After purchase, you will receive a QR code to scan at the ticket gate.
  2. Contactless payment: Use bank card (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Napas), chip-embedded citizen identification card, or HCMC Metro HURC application to scan at the gate.
  3. Download the BusMap or HCMC Metro HURC app: Look up routes, buy tickets, and pay online.

Note: If you go past the station, you need to buy an additional ticket. Unused tickets can be exchanged or refunded according to regulations.

Instructions for traveling by metro line 1

First time using the metro? Don't worry, here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose your departure station: Find the station closest to you. For example, if you are in District 1, Ben Thanh Station is the ideal choice. If you are in Thu Duc, National University or Suoi Tien Station would be more convenient.
  2. Route lookup: Use the BusMap app or the map at the station to know the destination station and the number of stations to pass through.
  3. Buy tickets: Go to a ticket vending machine or use a contactless card/device. Be sure to check the destination station on the ticket.
  4. Through the ticket gate: Scan the QR code or tap your card on the reader. The gate will open automatically.
  5. Boarding the train: Check the signs and maps on the train to make sure you are going in the right direction. For example, if you are going from Thao Dien station to Ben Thanh station, take the train heading towards Ben Thanh station.
  6. Get off at your destination station: Listen to the announcements or watch the on-board screen. When you arrive at the station, go to the ticket gate by scanning the QR code or card again.

Tip: If you want to take check-in photos, choose elevated stations like Thao Dien or An Phu, which have views of the Saigon River and high-rise buildings.

Connecting to the bus: Increased flexibility

To support travel to metro stations, Ho Chi Minh City has deployed 17 new electric bus routes, operating from 5am to 10pm, with fares of only VND5,000/trip (VND3,000/trip for students). Some notable routes:

  • Route 158: Van Thanh bus station - Thanh Da residence (connecting Tan Cang station).
  • Route 166: National University - Suoi Tien (connecting National University station).
  • Route 168: University of Technical Education - Binh Thai Intersection (connecting Binh Thai Station, Thu Duc).
