Reuters news agency quoted a member of the Haiti Transitional Council as saying that with 6 votes in favor and 1 vote against, the council approved the appointment of Mr. Conille as interim Prime Minister, leading the government during the current transitional period.

Mr. Conille served as Prime Minister of Haiti for only 7 months during the 2011-2012 period.

In December 2012, he resigned after losing support from his cabinet and disagreeing with then-President Michel Martelly over reconstruction contracts after the 2010 earthquake and an investigation into politicians holding dual citizenship, which is illegal in Haiti.

The politician also served as the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in countries such as Burundi and Jamaica... Since January 2023, Mr. Conille has held the position of Regional Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Haiti's new interim Prime Minister has more than two decades of experience working in the development sector, mainly in international non-governmental organizations and the United Nations (UN).

His extensive experience is seen as key to Haiti's ability to garner international support as it prepares to launch a Kenya-led, UN-backed security mission.

The transitional council took over leadership in Haiti after Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in March. Ariel Henry left Haiti to seek support for the security mission but was unable to return due to the violence. Meanwhile, Haiti has been without a president since leader Jovenel Moise was assassinated in 2021.

The transitional council and its head, Edgard Leblanc, are now tasked with organizing general elections by February 7, 2026, as stipulated in the Haitian Constitution.
