(NLĐO) - Many major roads and intersections in Hanoi have experienced prolonged traffic congestion during rush hour in recent days.
In recent days, many major roads and intersections in Hanoi have experienced traffic congestion during rush hour.
The intersection around Khuat Duy Tien Street is frequently congested.
According to observations by the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper on the morning of January 11th, despite it being a weekend morning, at major intersections such as Nguyen Trai - Khuat Duy Tien, many drivers lost 2-3 traffic light cycles to get through a 150-meter stretch of road. Similarly, on Lang Street, passing through the Lang Ha-Le Van Luong intersection, the traffic jam stretched for about 450 meters, taking approximately 5-10 minutes to pass through this intersection...
The area from Nguyen Trai Street to the Khuat Duy Tien intersection experienced prolonged traffic congestion.
Traffic police were present at "hot spots" to direct traffic and assist in traffic management to minimize congestion. Most road users obeyed traffic laws, moving slowly and in orderly rows, with fewer instances of driving onto sidewalks compared to before.
As the year draws to a close, people in Hanoi are busier than usual with shopping, transporting goods, and traveling. At the same time, Decree 168 officially comes into effect on January 1, 2025.
Ms. Mai Lan, 32 years old, living in Thanh Xuan district, said: "Previously, I admit that there were times I tried to run a yellow light because I thought waiting a little longer would be a waste of time. But now, with such high fines, I have to be more careful. Now, every time I go out, I always remind myself to obey the law to avoid unnecessary trouble."

Nguyen Huy, an office worker on Lang Street, said: "I used to rush to work in the mornings, but now I don't dare to cut on the sidewalk or speed anymore. I just follow the rules, even if it's slower, it's safer and I don't have to worry about getting fined."

People complied and stopped at the traffic light.
Decree 168/2024, effective from January 1, 2025, stipulates that the penalties for many traffic violations will increase by tens of times.
Accordingly, Decree 168 will severely punish behaviors that cause traffic accidents and demonstrate a disregard for the law when participating in traffic, by significantly increasing fines. For example, the fine for drivers who fail to obey traffic signals will be raised from 4-6 million VND to 18-20 million VND.
Traffic in the Lang Street area was also severely congested.
The following behaviors will be subject to penalties 3 to 30 times higher than current regulations: transporting goods in vehicles without proper securing; obstructing or failing to comply with inspection and control requests from law enforcement officers; and failing to obey traffic control signals.
The penalties for opening car doors or leaving them open unsafely, causing traffic accidents, have been drastically increased, by 36 to 50 times. For motorcyclists and moped riders violating traffic safety regulations, the penalties have also increased compared to current levels.
