“This is the first time I have experienced the harshness of the rainy season in the highlands,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Thach Thao (teacher at Son Lien Primary and Secondary Boarding School, Son Tay Thuong Commune) wrote on her personal Facebook page.
This status was posted along with many pictures of Ms. Thao and her colleagues walking to school. In many sections, teachers had to go through the forest and across landslides. This image received hundreds of interactions from social media users.

Ms. Thao has been working at the school in the mountainous area of Son Tay Thuong commune since 2024. Her home is in Son Ha commune, about 40km from the school. Heavy rains at the end of October caused landslides to cut off the road, forcing the young teacher to spend 3-4 hours, most of the time walking, to get to school.
Due to heavy rains and landslides in many places, local authorities have given students a day off. The school where Ms. Thao is teaching has 127 boarding students. She and her colleagues have to try to get to the school to manage and support the students.
“My house in Son Ha commune was flooded. I quickly finished cleaning the house and returned to school with my colleagues. The landslide had to be walked, tiring and dangerous, but as a teacher in the highlands, I had to try,” Ms. Thao shared.

The most complicated landslide situation occurred on the road from the center of Son Tay Thuong commune to Son Lien Primary and Secondary Boarding School. The road is 10km long but has up to 25 landslide spots, teachers spent nearly 2 hours walking across this area.
According to Mr. Pham Hong Khuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Tay Thuong Commune, there are 47 landslides in the commune that have cut off many roads. The local government has decided to let students stay home from school to ensure safety.
Over the past two days, the commune has mobilized shock troops, including many teachers from schools, to help fix small landslides. For large landslides, mechanical equipment must be mobilized to clear the road.

“During the rainy season, landslides bury roads, causing many difficulties for teachers and students. Teachers have to manage the students who are still at school while also participating in landslide relief work with the commune’s emergency response team,” Mr. Khuyen informed.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thai, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Ngai province, heavy rains caused floods and landslides, so the Department sent a document to communes, wards, and special zones to proactively let students stay home from school to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
“The area is so large that the Department cannot fully grasp the actual situation in each locality. Therefore, when floods or landslides occur, leaders of communes, wards and special zones will proactively let students stay home from school,” said Mr. Thai.
