The number of super-rich people with assets of over 30 million USD has doubled in 5 years in Vietnam. By the end of 2022, there were 1,059 super-rich people in Vietnam. It is forecasted that by 2027, the number of super-rich people in Vietnam will be nearly 1,300 people.

According to the latest prosperity report by Knight Frank - a real estate consulting group headquartered in the UK, the number of super-rich people in Vietnam with assets of over 30 million USD (equivalent to more than 700,000 billion VND) has nearly doubled between 2017 and 2022.

Specifically, from 583 individuals in Vietnam with net assets of over 30 million USD in 2017, by the end of last year this number had reached 1,059 people, an increase of 82% after only 5 years. It is forecasted that by 2027, the number of these super-rich people will increase to nearly 1,300 people, equivalent to an increase of 122% within 10 years.

Along with the super-rich, the number of rich people with assets of 1 million USD or more in Vietnam has also increased by 70% in the past 5 years.

A report in early 2023 by Knight Frank also showed that the number of super-rich people with assets of over 30 million USD in Vietnam ranks 3rd among ASEAN-6 countries.

According to statistics, in 2021, Vietnam had 72,135 USD millionaires. With this number, Vietnam ranked 4th in Southeast Asia in terms of millionaires, after Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. It is forecasted that after 4 years, the number of USD millionaires in Vietnam will reach 114,807 people.

Knight Frank's report shows that the change in the rich and super-rich population in Vietnam is also part of the prosperity trend across Asia. Accordingly, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia lead the markets with the fastest growing super-rich population, about 7-9%. In the Asia- Pacific region, the super-rich population has increased dramatically by nearly 51% in the 5 years to 2022.

Ms. Christine Li - Director of Research Services Asia - Pacific of Knight Frank - said that according to data from the Prosperity Report, after a record increase of 7.5% in 2021, the Asia - Pacific super-rich population decreased by 5.7% in 2022. However, 3 out of 10 markets with the strongest growth in the super-rich population globally are Southeast Asian countries (Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia) with an increase of 7-9%. In the long term, this region still has a lot of potential and prospects for prosperous development, leading in the number of super-rich population and economic development opportunities.

The latest report by investment migration consultancy Henley & Partners also shows that Ho Chi Minh City currently has 7,700 people with investable assets of 1 million USD or more, of which 15 people have 100 million USD and 3 USD billionaires.

"Ho Chi Minh City is emerging as Asia's next millionaire hotspot. The city has seen growth in sectors such as financial services, textiles, technology, electronics, telecommunications, chemicals and tourism ," said Amoil, research director at New World Wealth, a wealth research firm that collaborated with Henley & Partners to produce the report.

According to the 2023 list of world billionaires published by Forbes in April, Vietnam still has 6 USD billionaires on the list of the world's richest people, 1 person less than in 2022.

USD billionaires include: Chairman of Vingroup Corporation Pham Nhat Vuong, VietJet Air General Director Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Hoa Phat Group Chairman Tran Dinh Long, Techcombank Chairman Ho Hung Anh, Masan Group Chairman Nguyen Dang Quang and Truong Hai Auto Corporation (Thaco Group) Chairman Tran Ba ​​Duong.

Among the Vietnamese USD billionaires, he Pham Nhat Vuong still holds the top spot with a net worth of $4.6 billion, making him the 586th richest person in the world. However, Mr. Vuong's fortune has dropped sharply compared to Forbes' estimate in early 2022 of $6.2 billion.

Grandma Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao Vietjet Air returned to 2nd place with assets worth 2.3 billion USD - ranked 1,318 globally. Compared to 1 year ago, Ms. Thao's assets also decreased by 800 million USD. Meanwhile, the "steel king" Tran Dinh Long from 2nd place last year, now it has dropped to 3rd place with assets reaching 1.8 billion USD. The sharp decline in Hoa Phat stock price in recent times may be the reason why Mr. Long's assets have decreased sharply, losing 1.4 billion USD after 1 year.

The person with the highest ranking on the list of Vietnamese USD billionaires is Mr. Tran Ba ​​Duong of Truong Hai Auto Corporation. This year, Mr. Tran Ba ​​Duong is estimated to have assets worth 1.5 billion USD, ranking 4th. Billionaire Tran Ba ​​Duong's assets only decreased by 200 million USD compared to the beginning of 2022.

Next is him. Ho Hung Anh - Techcombank Chairman - currently owns assets worth 1.5 billion USD, down 800 million USD and finally billionaire Nguyen Dang Quang has assets worth 1.2 billion USD, 700 million lower than 1 year ago.

To be in the top 1% of the population with the largest assets in Vietnam, you need to have a minimum asset of 291,334 USD. To be in the top 10%, you need a minimum asset of 68,680 USD. The average asset of those in the top 5% richest population in 2021 is 316,658 USD (equivalent to 7.8 billion VND), the top 10% richest is 181,132 USD (equivalent to 4.1 billion VND). Meanwhile, the average asset of the poorest 50% is only 3,429 USD (nearly 78 million VND).
