New tilapia breed helps Nghe An farmers make profit from earthen ponds

From the earthen ponds that only raised freshwater fish for a moderate income, Mr. Nguyen Sy Danh in Quynh Van commune (Nghe An) boldly switched to experimenting with the Hong Sinh tilapia variety. Thanks to the advantages of being easy to raise, gaining weight quickly, low cost and having a favorable consumption market, the model has brought about outstanding economic efficiency.

Mr. Danh has 5 ponds with a total area of nearly 4,000m², facilitated by the abundant water source from the Vach Bac canal. Previously, he only raised traditional freshwater fish varieties, with modest income. Since the beginning of last year, he has spent time visiting and learning about tilapia farming models in Hai Phong and some farms in the region, then decided to invest in testing the Hong Sinh tilapia breed - a new breed that can be raised at high density, has large commercial weight and is suitable for earthen pond conditions and local available food sources.

Mr. Danh shared: “Before, I raised freshwater fish all year round, but the economic efficiency was not significant. When researching in Hai Phong and some large farms, I found that Hong Sinh tilapia is suitable for both local soil conditions, water sources and food sources, so I decided to try raising it.”

In early 2025, with support from the Quynh Luu Agricultural Service Station in terms of breeds, techniques and specialized feed sources, he released 10,000 fish on a trial basis. In addition to industrial feed, he also took advantage of water spinach, grass... available in the garden to reduce costs. After nearly half a year of care, the fish grew quickly, had few diseases, and reached a survival rate of about 85%. The first harvest in July 2025 yielded nearly 4 tons of fish, each weighing 1.5-2kg.

With a selling price of 35,000 VND/kg and a revenue of over 100 million VND, he earned a net profit of nearly 50 million VND after only half a year. “What makes me most secure is that the consumption market is quite stable. Hong Sinh tilapia has thick, fragrant meat, and is ordered by traders directly from the pond. Raising it is not difficult, as long as you follow the correct process, the results will be superior to traditional fish,” Mr. Danh added.

According to the assessment of the Quynh Luu Agricultural Service Station, the pilot results showed that the fish grew quickly, evenly, and had a low loss rate. The average fish weighed 1 kg/fish, with an estimated total output of over 7 tons. After deducting nearly 200 million VND in expenses, the net profit was about 45 million VND. Experts say that if raised in favorable conditions, Hong Sinh tilapia can reach a weight of 4-5 kg/fish.

“Mr. Danh strictly followed the technical steps, from pond renovation, breed selection, appropriate stocking density to care and environmental management. Thanks to that, the fish grew steadily, with few diseases. This is a positive signal for replicating the model in areas with similar conditions.”

Mr. Nguyen Anh Hung, Head of Quynh Luu Agricultural Service Station

The model of raising commercial tilapia Hong Sinh in earthen ponds in Quynh Van commune shows that this is a promising new direction, especially in areas with stable water sources and farmers with experience in aquaculture. Mr. Danh's initial success is proof that, when qualified in terms of techniques, breeds and environmental management, farmers can completely increase production value and improve income.

Of course, not every household is successful from the start. Because in addition to techniques, farmers also have to consider the risks from erratic weather, large temperature differences between day and night, which can easily shock fish and slow growth. Therefore, experts recommend that to be successful, close support is needed in technical processes, disease prevention and environmental management. In addition, many tours and training sessions need to be organized so that farmers can gain practical experience before expanding.

The initial success in Quynh Van commune has proven that, as long as farmers know how to apply the correct process, they can completely increase their income from their own ponds.
