Thanks to the latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), Google Translate will be updated with two important features: real-time live translation and a language learning tool.
These new features are powered by Google's Gemini model, which significantly improves translation quality, multimodal translation capabilities, and text-to-speech (TTS) functionality.
Live, real-time interpretation
Google Translate introduces "Live Translate," a feature that allows users to engage in instant two-way conversations.

To try it out, open the Google Translate app on your Android or iPhone, select Conversations , then choose a language pair (such as Vietnamese – English) and start speaking. The app will then translate your audio and display subtitles on the screen. This feature supports over 70 languages, including Vietnamese. Note that you need to update to the latest version to use it.
The new interface works within the conversational flow and can seamlessly switch between two languages by "intelligently recognizing pauses, intonation, and speech." Advanced speech and voice recognition models have been trained to work effectively even in noisy environments such as airports and cafes.
This feature is currently being rolled out on Google Translate for both Android and iOS. It is expected to be a valuable tool for users traveling to a foreign country without fluency in the language.
Personalized language learning tools
Furthermore, Google Translate competes with the language learning app Duolingo by adding a new language learning feature focused on conversational practice. Users can choose their level (Beginner, Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced) and specific practice goals, or select from pre-set scenarios such as "Everyday Communication" or " Travel and Transportation".
The app will create personalized listening and speaking practice sessions. When you choose a scenario, you can: Practice listening by listening to dialogues and tapping on words you recognize to improve your comprehension; Practice speaking by repeating the dialogue with prompts when needed.
Google will track your daily progress to help you build more confident communication skills.
This feature is currently being tested on Google Translate for Android and iOS. Initially, it will apply to English speakers practicing Spanish and French, as well as Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practicing English.
Google says that every month people translate about 1 trillion words through Google Translate, Search, and visual tools like Lens and Circle to Search. With AI, language barriers can be overcome more easily.
