Contribute to the development of the Vietnamese art market

A healthy domestic market for Vietnamese art, for Vietnamese people to consume Vietnamese art is a wish repeatedly mentioned at the scientific conference Developing the art market in Vietnam: Current situation and solutions organized by the Institute of Culture, Arts, Sports and Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) in Hanoi on October 25.

The market is full of worries

At the conference, curator Ly Doi expressed concerns about a domestic art market, or rather a healthy domestic market. According to Mr. Ly Doi, in the general art map of Indochina and Southeast Asia, Vietnamese art does not lack a distinctive voice, but always lacks a high position. The reason for this, according to him, is "the lack of a healthy domestic market, the lack of research and criticism of the right stature, the lack of a national marketing strategy, the lack of a pricing system and insurance, and supporting banks".

Regarding cinema, critic Le Hong Lam highly appreciated the recent victory of domestic cinema through revenue. However, Mr. Lam still believes that the Vietnamese cinema market still has many limitations. The number of films produced each year is only 30-40 (compared to Korea with over 200 films), most of which are low-quality horror films. Production budgets are much lower than those of other countries in the region, affecting technical quality and visual effects. Lack of specialized human resources leads to a shortage of personnel in stages such as production, scriptwriting, editing... In addition, the distribution structure is dominated by foreign companies, causing the Vietnamese film industry to face the risk of bleeding profits abroad.

Necessary changes

Professor Tran Thanh Hiep, former Principal of the Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema, mentioned changing the training model. Accordingly, the old model only trained film directors (associated with subsidized production using state funding), but currently the market needs production directors with different skills. "I think film production director is also a profession, organizing the production of a film from beginning to end, promoting and bringing the film to viewers is also a profession that requires talent... I think it's time for the Vietnam Film Festival to also have awards for film producers like directors, screenwriters, and cameramen," Professor Hiep commented.

Cinema measurement systems were also mentioned at the conference. For example, Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong of Box Office Vietnam mentioned transparent box office statistics, helping the market develop faster and more sustainably. "In the US, daily data helps producers and theaters adjust plans in a timely manner. In Korea, centralized data creates a common support for the entire industry. Europe uses audience numbers to compare between countries, while Japan combines weekly and yearly monitoring to grasp long-term trends," said Mr. Duong.

Meanwhile, the lack of and weak management human resources capable of operating galleries is what Ms. Nguyen Lan Huong, Department of Science, Technology, Training and Environment (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), mentioned. Accordingly, the Ministry has implemented the project of Training human resources for culture and arts 2016 - 2020, oriented to 2030, but mainly focused on performing arts and cinema, without paying attention to the field of fine arts and painting. Meanwhile, in the world, curation is a standardized profession with a formal training system.
