Green Connection Journey: Ba Lua Archipelago

Báo An GiangBáo An Giang20/09/2025

In this special episode, MC Ngoc Thuy and actress Khanh Van will take the audience to a very unique location: Ba Lua Archipelago, known as "Ha Long of the South". Located in Kien Luong district, Kien Giang province, this archipelago includes about 40 large and small islands, with wild, poetic beauty, fresh air and especially calm sea, no big waves, very suitable for tourists to explore all year round.

Background: Ba Lua Archipelago – “Southern Ha Long”

Known as the “Southern Ha Long”, Ba Lua archipelago is located in Son Hai commune, Kien Luong district, Kien Giang province, including more than 40 large and small islands, creating a vast natural picture with blue water, white sand beaches interspersed with pebble beaches of many shapes and fresh air all year round. The sea here is shallow and calm; in the low tide season, there are places where visitors can wade from one island to another, the water is only as deep as an adult’s waist. This is a strange but safe experience when traveling with locals. From Hon Heo, Hon Ngang to Ba Hon Dam cluster (Dam Duong, Dam Duoc, Dam Gieng), each island has a “character”: a suitable place for camping, an ideal place to watch the sunset, a place shaded by rare medicinal plants.

Extremely interesting experience of catching crabs and snails

Thanks to its sheltered, nutrient-rich waters, Ba Lua is rich in seafood, grouper, cobia, snapper, oysters, and snails. Around many islands are shallow coral reefs and tidal flats where you can see starfish and sea snails at low tide. Visitors can paddle SUP or kayak along small bays or go up to fish rafts to listen to locals tell stories about the monsoon season, how to "raise the sea" sustainably. With few noisy services and engine noises, Ba Lua is attractive because of its simplicity: listen to the waves breathe at night, wake up early in the morning to welcome the sunrise, and take shelter under the cool shade of trees at noon. A "peaceful paradise" for those who want to escape the noise, immerse themselves in the slow pace of coastal life, and is an ideal destination all year round if you travel lightly, keep clean, and limit single-use plastics so that the beauty here will always be green.

Preserving the craft: Net weaving in Hon Heo

The first stop is Hon Heo - one of the islands with the earliest settlers. The net weaving profession is still preserved by the people as part of the soul of the sea. Here, the life of the fishermen still retains its traditional features, especially the net weaving profession. When the nets are old and torn after each trip at sea, the people do not throw them away but bring them back for skillful workers like the women to meticulously repair. This process is not only a way to make a living but also an art. Each torn part of the net is cut away, the old strings are cleaned, and then woven again with careful needles and threads. The image of women sitting weaving nets under the shade of trees, with nimble fingers, is like an affirmation of the diligence, meticulousness and love of the profession of the coastal people.

Experience being a fisherman at Ba Hon Dam

Interesting experiences in Ba Lua

Continuing their journey, Ngoc Thuy and Khanh Van came to another group of islands in the Ba Lua archipelago, further offshore than Hon Heo, which is Hon Dam Duyen. Here, the colorful houses standing out on the sea have been used by the people to develop a community tourism model. One of the experiences that many tourists love is to try being a fisherman. Tourists do not need to go out to sea but can "harvest" a variety of seafood such as crabs, snails, oysters... right on the island. This is an extremely interesting activity, not only providing delicious meals but also helping tourists understand more about the life and work of fishermen here.

“Green Connection Journey” not only brings the audience to the majestic nature, but also opens small doors for us to see the warm hearts of people. Here, traditional values meet innovation, and each story, each relic becomes a commitment to culture and the future. This is an inspiring journey of environmental protection and sustainable tourism development, where every small action can contribute to creating a greener future.
