More than 20 years after their construction and operation, the Thu Duc, Hoc Mon, and Binh Dien wholesale markets continue to play a crucial role in the supply chain of goods for the people of Ho Chi Minh City and some neighboring provinces.
In Ho Chi Minh City, there are three major wholesale markets for agricultural and food products: Thu Duc, Hoc Mon, and Binh Dien. These markets have undergone approximately 20 years of construction and development, serving as the main distribution source for traditional markets, businesses, and city residents... Binh Dien Wholesale Market is located on Nguyen Van Linh Boulevard, in the southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, in Ward 7, District 8. It is considered the largest wholesale market in Vietnam today, with a total area of 65 hectares, and phase 1 currently in operation covering approximately 34 hectares (Photo: An Huy). |
The market comprises 7 covered stalls and 2 warehouses, a parking lot, and auxiliary facilities. It primarily sells seafood, pork, and vegetables. Currently, it houses over 1,500 traders engaged in diverse businesses, supplying nearly 50% of Ho Chi Minh City's food production (Photo: An Huy). |
The market is conveniently located for trade, situated on Nguyen Van Linh Boulevard, approximately 750m from National Highway 1 and 15km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. One side of the market borders the Ben Luc River, facilitating the transportation of goods by waterway from the Mekong Delta provinces (Photo: An Huy). |
The Binh Dien wholesale market was built and put into operation in 2006, trading in goods such as: fresh flowers, vegetables and fruits, freshwater fish and high-end seafood, aquatic products (sea fish), livestock meat, dried seafood and various types of fish sauce, and fruits (Photo: An Huy). |
Located at the eastern gateway of the city, Thu Duc wholesale market covers an area of approximately 20 hectares and is a hub for agricultural products, vegetables, and fruits from various provinces, distributed to smaller markets throughout the city (Photo: Hoang Huong). |
Container trucks constantly enter and exit the loading area at Thu Duc wholesale market. Here, goods are transferred by workers to tricycles for transport to the stalls of small traders in the market (Photo: Hoang Huong). |
The market comprises covered market areas and supporting facilities such as warehouses, processing areas, management areas, and a waste treatment plant. Since its operation began, Thu Duc wholesale market has contributed to creating jobs for thousands of workers (Photo: Hoang Huong). |
With an area of approximately 10 hectares, Hoc Mon wholesale market is a transit and supply point for food and agricultural products in the northwestern part of the city (Photo: Hoang Huong). |
Speaking with a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper, a representative of the Hoc Mon Wholesale Market Management Board said that the market receives between 2,300 and 2,500 tons of goods daily. This includes approximately 1,300 tons of vegetables and fruits from other provinces; around 250 tons of leafy vegetables; around 300 tons of other produce; and the remainder being pork. Overall, the quantity of imported agricultural products is stable (Photo: Hoang Huong). "While Binh Dien and Thu Duc wholesale markets mainly operate at night and early morning, Hoc Mon wholesale market operates during the day. Each day, the market receives about 8,000 to 10,000 customers. Because the market operates 24/7, maintenance and upkeep are regularly carried out," the representative of the Hoc Mon Wholesale Market Management Board stated. |
According to observations by reporters, despite prohibition signs, the encroachment of sidewalks and roads by residents and spontaneous street vendors continues unabated on the streets surrounding the markets. Garbage is scattered everywhere, emitting foul odors, causing traffic hazards and detracting from urban aesthetics (Photo: Hoang Huong). |
Recently, the Department of Industry and Trade submitted a proposal to the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee and the Standing Committee of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City regarding the research and development of a fourth wholesale market in Tan Hiep commune (Hoc Mon district) with a scale of over 100 hectares. The project will be implemented using a method where the state plans the area, allocates land and clears the site, while businesses invest in infrastructure, facilities and manage and operate the market (Photo: Hoang Huong). |
