" Coach Mai Duc Chung has not yet informed the Vietnam Football Federation about leaving the Vietnam national team after his contract expires ," said a VFF leader.
Previously, in an interview with the press on the morning of October 23, Coach Mai Duc Chung said he would leave the Vietnam team when his contract expires at the end of this year. Currently, he and the team will focus on completing the task in the second qualifying round of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
" I can't do it forever. It's inevitable that bamboo will age and new bamboo will grow. It's time for me to rest. I've decided that after my contract ends this year, I will rest, " the coach of the Vietnamese women's team shared.
Coach Mai Duc Chung wants to stop leading the Vietnamese women's team after his contract expires.
This is not the first time coach Mai Duc Chung has expressed his desire to resign from leading the Vietnamese women's team. In February 2022, after the women's team qualified for the 2023 World Cup finals, he wanted to stop working to rest.
However, in August 2022, VFF and coach Mai Duc Chung reached an agreement to extend the contract until the end of 2023. Coach Mai Duc Chung recommended expert Akira Ijiri - coach of Vietnam's youth women's teams to succeed the role he left behind.
The 72-year-old military leader said: " The advantage for the Japanese expert is that he has many years of experience training and coaching young players and understands the culture and lifestyle of Vietnamese people. Along with professional issues, that is also a very favorable factor.
We won't have to hire a foreign coach who doesn't understand the culture here. I think that's good for Vietnamese women's football ."
The Vietnamese women's team will leave for Uzbekistan tonight, October 23, to participate in the second qualifying round of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The team will compete against Uzbekistan (October 26), India (October 29) and Japan (November 1).
The top three teams from each group and the best runner-up will advance to the third qualifying round.
These four teams are drawn into two-legged knockout matches. The two winners will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in France.
The Vietnamese women's team has not set a specific goal. VFF considers this an opportunity for the whole team, especially the young players, to gain experience, aiming for the further goal of the 2027 Women's World Cup.
