More than half a year after being fired by the Indonesian team, coach Shin Tae-yong has officially returned to the coaching chair when he agreed to lead Ulsan HD. This 55-year-old strategist was appointed to replace Kim Pan-gon in the context of Ulsan HD being mired in crisis.
The reigning Korean champions have gone 11 consecutive matches without a win, including three straight defeats at the 2025 Club World Cup. In the K-League, they have fallen into the relegation zone with seven consecutive draws and losses.
Ulsan HD’s chance to defend the championship is almost gone. They are 23 points behind the top team Jeonbuk. However, this club still decided to “change the general” to stop the crisis. According to the media, Ulsan HD agreed to offer the highest salary in Korean football to convince Shin Tae-yong to accept.
This is Shin Tae-yong's first return to the K-League in 13 years. The tactician began his coaching career at Seongnam Ilhwa (now Seongnam FC) and has since amassed a diverse portfolio, including managing the Korean youth and senior teams, as well as the Indonesian national teams.
Before accepting the Ulsan HD position, Shin Tae-yong was the Vice President of the Korean Football Association. He decided to give up this position to focus on his new job.
The Korea Football Federation briefly confirmed: "Shin Tae-yong resigned as Vice President of the 55th Executive Committee of the Federation on July 4."
Coach Shin Tae-yong became Vice President of the Korea Football Association in April this year and is responsible for foreign cooperation with the national team, with the main task of observing and evaluating Korean players playing abroad. He, along with former Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo, is expected to revive the Korean team after a series of recent forgettable results.
