The exam board mistakenly entered the wrong scores, resulting in a failing student being declared the 'top student of 10th grade'.

On October 8th, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung, Chief Inspector of the Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training, stated that the case of a 10th-grade student from Le Hong Phong High School (Bim Son Town, Thanh Hoa Province) who initially passed but then failed the entrance exam for 10th grade has been investigated and clarified by the department.

This student also achieved the top score when the admission results for 10th grade at Le Hong Phong High School for the 2024-2025 school year were announced.

Le Hong Phong High School

According to Mr. Dung, following a complaint about a 10th-grade student at Le Hong Phong High School achieving unusually high scores in the 2024-2025 10th-grade entrance exam, despite the student's abilities being considered average, the Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training's Inspectorate conducted an investigation to clarify the matter.

Specifically, the student's scores for the 10th grade entrance exam, as announced on the transcript, were: Math 8 points; Literature 8.5 points; English 6.4 points (all scores before weighting). However, upon examination, the student only achieved Math 4.5 points; Literature 6.5 points; and English 2.4 points.

Based on the admission cutoff scores for Le Hong Phong High School for the 2024-2025 school year, this student did not score high enough to be admitted to grade 10. Therefore, the Le Hong Phong High School Admissions Council has announced that the student was not admitted and must discontinue their studies.

Regarding the cause of the incident, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung stated that the inspection team had verified and determined that the cause was due to the grading and scoring team of the Examination Board, Ngoc Lac High School, mistakenly entering the wrong exam scores.

The grading committee of Ngoc Lac High School also explained that the reason for the incorrect scoring was due to work pressure and a lack of concentration during the grading process, leading to the mistake in recording the exam scores.

Members of the grading committee at Ngoc Lac High School also affirmed that the mistake in recording the exam score for the student was "completely unintentional".
