2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community. It is also the year to begin implementing the newly adopted ASEAN Community Vision 2045. This summit in Malaysia also marks the accession of Timor-Leste as the 11th member of ASEAN.
The international order is shifting rapidly, as strategic competition and trade tensions between major powers are increasing. In the context of a multipolar world that is increasingly taking shape, countries are proactively expanding cooperation to consolidate their positions and protect their interests.
As a long-standing and cohesive regional organization, ASEAN is asserting its importance and centrality. Many countries are re-evaluating ASEAN’s role to find opportunities to open relations, especially in the context of the emerging trend of “South-South cooperation” among developing countries.
Gathering many top world leaders such as the Presidents of the United States, Brazil, South Africa; the Prime Ministers of China, India, Canada and leaders of ASEAN countries, the 47th ASEAN Summit is an opportunity for ASEAN to demonstrate its proactive role in dealing with regional and world challenges.
With the theme of “integration and sustainability”, the conference is expected to adopt 84 documents. These are expected to be the answers to major issues such as ASEAN economic integration, maintaining economic resilience and regional autonomy in the context of increasing competition between the US and China, accelerating the restructuring of the global supply chain, etc.
In addition, promoting solutions to complex regional issues such as conflict and political instability in Myanmar and border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia will be a test of ASEAN's capacity and solidarity at this Summit.
