Reviving memories

The 6 episodes of Time, Oh! Telling Stories have the following themes: “Street Tells” with artistic stories across space and time; The gentle beauty of Vietnamese women through “Em xinh”; “Song doi o cho” depicts a time of struggling to make a living; “Thuong nho dong que” - a journey back to memories of the homeland...

With each theme, the storytelling is different, such as with “Memories of the Station and the Trains”, the audience has the opportunity to meet and listen to People's Artist Thanh Hoa perform the immortal song Train you pass the mountain (musician Phan Lac Hoa) or the unforgettable emotions of actress Hong Anh in the movie Doi Cat.

Their memories are all related to the image of the station, the train, and even on the stage there is a model of a train that evokes many feelings of separation and reunion.

On television recently, there have been many similar programs, such as: Cine 7 - Vietnamese Film Memories, which takes the audience to explore interesting behind-the-scenes stories of classic Vietnamese films of the past; Happy Memories, which contributes to recreating countless memories of a bygone era; and Pride Melodies, Youth Bar, etc., which have also been widely welcomed by the audience.

The “retro” or “nostalgia” wave is a prominent trend. People, in the modern and digital world, tend to return to the familiar, simple things of the past to find a sense of peace.

It makes sense that broadcasters, streaming platforms, and producers would capitalize on this trend – both to please loyal audiences and to open up new experiences for younger audiences. Recreating nostalgic shows is not only for entertainment, but also a way to preserve cultural values, retain the spirit of the times, and inspire creativity.

However, despite the popularity of nostalgic TV shows, reawakening memories is not always easy. For one thing, these shows are often associated with a particular generation – only those who lived through that period can feel the nostalgia.

Therefore, to find a touch point with young audiences, there must be stories, details, and methods that are sufficiently new and attractive. Without innovation in content, language, production technology, etc., nostalgic programs can easily become repetitive copies rather than the deep emotional touch as expected.
