Hue continues to warn of high risk of landslides and subsidence due to floods and rains

On the afternoon of October 24, Hue city authorities continued to issue warnings about flash floods, landslides, and land subsidence due to heavy rain and water flow.

Heavy rains have been continuing for the past few days, due to the influence of storm No. 12's circulation, causing soil moisture in some areas of Hue city to be nearly saturated (over 85%) or reaching a saturated state. Therefore, in 21 communes and wards of Hue city, there continues to be a high risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams in mountainous areas; landslides on steep slopes, and land subsidence, including: Communes from A Luoi 1 to A Luoi 5, Phong Dien, Binh Dien, Long Quang, Nam Dong, Khe Tre, Phu Loc, Loc An, Chan May-Lang Co, Hung Loc, Huong An, Huong Tra, Kim Long, Kim Tra, Phong Thai, Phu Bai, Vinh Loc.

Authorities also warned that flash floods and landslides can have a very negative impact on the environment, threaten people's lives; cause local traffic congestion, affect the movement of vehicles; destroy civil and economic works, causing damage to production and socio-economic activities.

It is forecasted that from now until October 26, Hue city will have heavy rain, very heavy rain; total rainfall will be 80 - 200mm, in some places over 350mm. In addition to the risk of flash floods and landslides, heavy rain also poses a high risk of causing flooding in low-lying areas downstream of rivers.

By the afternoon of the same day, many landslides and local flooding on National Highways and Provincial Roads in Hue City have been barricaded and repaired. National Highway 49 had a negative slope landslide at Km23+800 with a length of 14m; at Km23+800, the negative slope landslide towards the bank of the Huong River, with a risk of further landslides; the authorities have placed warning signs and are on guard duty. Ho Chi Minh Road had only minor landslides and has been repaired, traffic is normal. National Highway 49B section of Phong Dinh, Phong Phu, Duong No wards was flooded from 0.1 - 0.4m at some points, so it was barricaded and prohibited for vehicles to pass. Provincial roads passing through low-lying areas along the Tam Giang - Cau Hai lagoon system in communes and wards such as Quang Dien, Phu Vang, Hoa Chau... had many points of local flooding due to prolonged heavy rain and high tides that have been barricaded.

According to the Hue City Department of Construction, the authorities are focusing on clearing fallen trees, mud and rubbish from the road surface as the water recedes; and on traffic control and monitoring landslides on mountainous roads. Flooded areas on the roads are barricaded, warning people and vehicles not to pass through. The Hue City Department of Construction is also coordinating with relevant units to deploy remedial measures to ensure traffic safety and travel safety for people.
