New direction from Bo Chinh ginseng

In recent years, along with the trend of changing crop structure, the model of developing medicinal plants in the direction of commodities is bringing positive signals in Thai Nguyen. In Minh Tien hamlet, Dong Hy commune, a young cooperative has been gradually "raising the level" of Bo Chinh ginseng, turning this precious plant into a high-value product, with a foothold in the market inside and outside the province.

From ginseng to high-value product chain

On the barren hilly land, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Director of Thien Phuc Medicinal Herbs Cooperative, boldly brought Bo Chinh ginseng to test planting. With a cool climate, sandy soil and average altitude, Minh Tien land is very suitable for this ginseng variety originating from the Central region. “In the early days, I had to travel everywhere to learn about the ginseng growing process. When I saw the plants growing well, I believed this was the right direction,” Ms. Binh recalled.

From a few initial ginseng beds, the cooperative has now expanded its scale to nearly 4 hectares, combining the cultivation of many other medicinal herbs such as yellow flower tea, Morinda officinalis, Euryale ferox, Platycodon grandiflorum... In October 2022, Thien Phuc Medicinal Herbs Cooperative was officially established with 9 members and created stable jobs for many local workers.

Not only growing medicinal plants, Ms. Binh is also creative in the model of raising chickens with herbs. Taking advantage of available raw materials such as Bo Chinh ginseng, Xuyen Chi leaves, tea and some other medicinal plants, she mixes them into food and water for the chickens.

Thanks to that, the chickens are healthy, have firm meat, are delicious, have little fat and are highly appreciated by consumers. “I want to aim for clean agricultural production, from crops to livestock, so that the products are truly good for consumers’ health,” said Ms. Binh.

Not stopping at growing and consuming fresh ginseng, Thien Phuc Medicinal Herbs Cooperative has invested in deep processing, diversifying products such as ginseng tea, ginseng extract, ginseng wine, ginseng powder and health protection foods. Thanks to that, the value of the product has increased many times compared to selling raw, at the same time extending the preservation time and expanding the consumption market. Currently, the products of the Cooperative are present at many fairs and clean agricultural product stores in Hanoi and the northern provinces.

Director of the Cooperative Nguyen Thi Binh said: Only when the product meets standards, has a brand and a stable market, will medicinal plants truly become commodity plants. We invest synchronously in the entire chain, from planting areas, harvesting to preliminary processing, packaging and product promotion. Currently, the Cooperative is completing the provincial OCOP program dossier for Bo Chinh ginseng tea, aiming to standardize quality and enhance product reputation in the market.

In parallel with the development of medicinal plants, the Cooperative also implements a model of raising chickens with herbs, opening a new direction connecting agriculture and medicinal plants. The Cooperative's chicken meat is used to process products such as herbal chicken ginseng porridge, ginseng hotpot broth, etc., both increasing economic value and being favored by consumers.

The door opens to new markets

In addition to production, Thien Phuc Medicinal Herbs Cooperative is also a pioneer in applying digital transformation in promoting and consuming products. The Cooperative has built a fanpage, website, TikTok channel, regularly livestreaming to introduce products, sharing the process of growing, harvesting and processing ginseng.

Vivid, authentic videos help consumers better understand the safe production process, while strengthening trust in local products. Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh said: Every week, we livestream or post videos introducing products. Customers in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and even abroad can order online. Revenue from online channels currently accounts for about 80% of the unit's total revenue.

Thanks to creative methods, Thai Nguyen medicinal products have gradually affirmed their position, reaching customers who care about health and prioritize clean products of natural origin.

Evaluating the effectiveness of the model, Ms. Vu Thi Thu Huong, Vice President of the Thai Nguyen Province Cooperative Union, said: Thien Phuc Medicinal Plants Cooperative is one of the pioneers in developing agricultural production associated with processing and applying digital transformation. This approach contributes to increasing the value of medicinal plants, forming concentrated raw material areas, creating jobs and stable income for people.

In the coming time, the Provincial Cooperative Union will coordinate with localities to expand growing areas, connect businesses and research institutes to build a medicinal value chain that meets GACP-WHO standards, thereby improving the competitiveness of local products.

The story of Thien Phuc Cooperative is a clear demonstration of the new farming mindset of Thai Nguyen people who dare to think, dare to do, shift from small-scale production to commodity agriculture, apply technology and strongly focus on the market. In the context of consumers increasingly preferring green, clean products of natural origin, medicinal plants, especially Bo Chinh ginseng, are opening up a new direction of development for Thai Nguyen agriculture, both preserving indigenous values and creating momentum for economic growth.

From the Minh Tien hill land today, we can believe that, when properly invested, linked with processing and market, Thai Nguyen medicinal plants will become a potential industry, contributing to building a green, sustainable and unique agriculture.
