Mobilizing forces to search for missing people in the "death" pit in Bac Kan

NDO - Since the morning of May 27, the Fire Prevention and Fighting Police and the Rescue Police of Bac Kan Province have mobilized forces and the most modern equipment to search for the victim who fell into the "death" hole in Kim Lu Commune, Na Ri District. However, as of 2:00 p.m., the victim's whereabouts have not been found.

This “death hole” appeared right in the middle of National Highway 3B connecting Bac Kan city to Na Ri district. The sinkhole is located in Hiep Luc village, Kim Lu commune, Na Ri district.

This sinkhole appeared after a loud noise in the early morning of March 29, with an initial size of about 7m long and about 5m deep.

By March 30, the sinkhole continued to expand in both width and depth. Authorities dumped hundreds of blocks of rock to fill and repair the hole, but the hole swallowed them all.

Because the cause of the sinkhole has not been determined to have a thorough solution, to ensure safety, Na Ri district has put up warning signs. At the same time, the locality has used corrugated iron to completely enclose the entire area of ​​the sinkhole, opening a bypass for vehicles to pass through.

Through the camera footage of a house near the sinkhole, at around 9:00 p.m. on May 26, a motorcyclist at high speed crashed through a corrugated iron fence and plunged straight into the "death" hole.

This morning (May 27), Colonel Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Deputy Director of Bac Kan Provincial Police, directly directed the search for victims at the scene.

The provincial police mobilized 18 officers and soldiers of the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department; 2 cars and 2 pumps to the scene.

The police used a specialized camera to search the bottom of the sinkhole. However, there was a large amount of mud and trash at the bottom of the hole, along with underground currents, so the camera's visibility was only about 25cm.

Authorities have only recovered a few sheets of corrugated iron that were blown into the hole and a jacket suspected to belong to the victim.

Authorities continued to use hooks to probe the bottom of the hole but to no avail.

By early this afternoon, authorities decided to use five high-capacity pumps to pump water out of the sinkhole to aid the search.

The provincial police are making great efforts, directing forces to try and determine to soon find the victim's whereabouts.
