On November 16, two EMB 314 Super Tucano training aircraft of Abdulrachman Saleh Air Squadron, Malang, of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) crashed in Watu Gedek, Keduwung Village area, East Java, killing four pilots.
Regarding the cause of the plane crash, in a press release on November 18, the Director of the Indonesian Air Force Information Department, Brigadier General Agung Sasongkojati, said that the investigation team had conducted a thorough investigation from the perspective of people, vehicles, missions, management, and weather, to determine the cause of the incident.
So far, the cause of the incident has been determined to be that after separating from the formation of four planes, the two Super Tucano planes entered an area of dense clouds, obscuring the pilots' vision.
General Agung added that there were no errors in the procedures and equipment. However, due to the above incident, all EMB 314 Super Tucano aircraft currently operated by TNI AU will be temporarily grounded.
The EMB-314 Super Tucano is a light combat trainer designed to meet the requirements of lightning attacks.
This is not the first time the Super Tucano aircraft has encountered an accident during TNI AU training.
Previously, in 2016, a Super Tucano crashed during a combat training exercise, killing two pilots and a civilian. The three aircraft were among 16 Super Tucanos purchased by TNI from Brazil in 2012.
Since 2015, there have been at least 19 accidents involving defense equipment in Indonesia.
