Việt NamViệt Nam20/09/2023

Over the past 46 years (September 1977 - September 2023), cooperation between Vietnam and the UN has achieved good results and had positive effects, both meeting Vietnam's requirements and interests in each period and contributing to enhancing Vietnam's role, voice and "imprint" of contributions at the UN.

These results will facilitate the joint efforts of Vietnam and the UN in overcoming existing shortcomings, expanding and further enhancing the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation, actively supporting Vietnam's national development and international integration, and contributing to enhancing the role of the UN in the new era.

During its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2008-2009 and 2020-2021), Vietnam has proposed many initiatives and solutions to global issues, such as the International Day for Epidemic Preparedness on December 27; establishing the Group of Friends of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); addressing the consequences of landmines and bombs, protecting essential infrastructure in conflicts; and promoting cooperation between the UN and ASEAN.

Vietnam also actively participates in the UN Peacekeeping Force; contributes to the discussion and adoption of many important UN resolutions and declarations on development cooperation, disarmament, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, anti-terrorism, and ensuring human rights.

Vietnam is considered by the United Nations and the international community as a successful example in implementing the Millennium Development Goals and a country determined to seriously implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

With high expectations from the international community, Vietnam is also holding important responsibilities in many major multilateral mechanisms of the United Nations.

Vietnam holds the role of Vice President of the 77th UN General Assembly representing the Asia-Pacific region, and concurrently assumes the responsibility of a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term.
