According to ETNews, leaked information shows that the two upcoming new generation iPhone models, including the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, will be equipped with cameras with variable aperture capabilities, promising improved image quality and flexibility when shooting in different lighting conditions.
The variable aperture feature, which was once abandoned by Samsung, is now back on the iPhone 18 Pro. It works like the human iris, automatically adjusting the amount of light that hits the sensor. In low light conditions, the lens will widen to capture more light, while in bright environments, the aperture will narrow to avoid overexposure.
Changing the aperture also affects depth of field, making for more effective background blur in portraits, while narrower apertures will keep more of the scene in focus. It’s not yet clear whether users will be able to manually adjust the aperture, or if iOS will automatically adjust based on the light levels in the environment.
According to ETNews, only the main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro has been upgraded with the variable aperture feature, because this is the most used camera. LG Innotek and Foxconn will be responsible for manufacturing the camera, while Luxshare and Sunny Optical will provide the actuator - an important component to ensure the camera's precise operation.

| Apple's integration of variable aperture into the iPhone 18 Pro has yet to be officially confirmed. |
While the iPhone 18 Pro will be the first iPhones to feature a variable aperture camera, they won't be the first phones on the market to feature it. Samsung's Galaxy S9 and S10 models previously featured the technology, but it was later dropped from the Galaxy S20 series due to size and cost issues. Other high-end smartphones like the Huawei Mate 50 Pro, Honor Magic 6 Pro, and Xiaomi 14 Ultra have also adopted the technology.
Apple's inclusion of variable aperture in the iPhone 18 Pro has yet to be officially confirmed. Previous leaks have suggested the iPhone 17 Pro series will get the feature, but it's likely to appear on the iPhone 18 Pro after all.
In addition to the iPhone 18 Pro, next year's iPhone lineup is expected to include the iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2, and the iPhone Fold - Apple's first foldable iPhone. These models are unlikely to have a variable aperture camera, similar to the leaked information about the iPhone Air 2 and iPhone Fold.
The standard iPhone 18 is expected to launch in the spring of 2027. While the Pro versions will offer an enhanced photography experience thanks to variable aperture, other models still focus on design and performance, without this feature to keep the price reasonable.
