Audience comments on Vietnamese films: Why did 'Ghost Lights' surpass the 100 billion VND mark?

After more than 10 days of release, 'Den Am Hon' has a total revenue exceeding 100 billion VND. This is truly a 'strange phenomenon' of Vietnamese cinema.

First of all, it must be said that The Ghost Lights does not have any "star" elements from the cast to the director, who is a complete "amateur", taking on many roles when making the film, from production director to scriptwriter, casting actors. Although this film was released after Tran Thanh and Thu Trang's film, it was also during the time when these two "hit" films were being shown. But consecutively on the days The Ghost Lights was released, it "dethroned" the films The Four Guardians and Billionaire Kiss in terms of ticket sales.

On social networks, there are also many opinions of praise and criticism for The Ghost Lamp , which in my opinion are divided into 3 factions: neutral, praise and criticism. I myself have watched The Ghost Lamp and found that the film also has many "flaws" such as a disjointed script, underacting actors, especially the main couple, sometimes dramatic dialogue... Based on The Nam Xuong Girl by Nguyen Du, but the way the story is developed in The Ghost Lamp is a bit illogical. While the opening builds a good atmosphere, the climax lacks persuasion, leaving many people feeling disappointed. In particular, the way the film ends is also controversial when it is judged to be too simple compared to what was built before. Another big technical problem is the unreasonable blending of regional accents. Although the film is set in a space with strong northern mountainous colors, the actors use many different regional accents.

However, in the Vietnamese film market that is saturated with easy-to-watch comedies and romances, The Ghost Light still attracts attention thanks to its boldness in exploiting folk materials, the wild mountainous setting and the spirit of daring to do something different. This change comes from the fact that the film is inspired by The Girl from Nam Xuong - a classic literary work, but exploits it through a spiritual perspective instead of the usual tragic storytelling or the excessive "scare the ghosts" horror style. This not only helps the film attract audiences nostalgic for the original story, but also creates novelty for those who love the spiritual - folk film genre.

Another highlight of The Soul Lamp is the construction of the beautiful and poetic Cao Bang landscape. The director took the time to research and choose very beautiful shooting angles. The costumes in the film are also quite well invested, creating harmony in a mysterious space imbued with spirituality. The wild, folk-style scenery not only helps the film create a characteristic atmosphere of the spiritual genre, but also makes the audience curious about the stories and mysterious legends of the northern mountainous region. This factor contributes to attracting viewers to the theater. It must also be said that the film's high revenue is thanks to "reviews" from the internet. Whether it is praise or criticism, fierce debate still creates curiosity, stimulating people to go see it. Director Hoang Nam and "spiritual medium" Hoang Kim Ngoc themselves are also digital content creators with several million followers, so many of their fans want to go see it out of curiosity...

Nevertheless, The Ghost Lamp has succeeded in bringing a new breeze to Vietnamese cinema. The boldness in exploiting folk themes, combined with the unique mountainous setting, helped the film attract attention and achieve good revenue. However, to become a truly excellent work, the crew needs to invest more in the plot, acting and consistency in the script.

The fact that The Ghost Light won in revenue shows that Vietnamese audiences are ready to accept films with different colors. This could be a positive signal, encouraging young directors to continue to experiment and invest in new stories instead of just following the trend of easy entertainment. If these weaknesses can be overcome, the spiritual - folk horror film genre may have a more solid position in the Vietnamese film market in the future.
