At around 10pm, residents of the Hoa Lan residential group, Huong Tra ward (former Tam Ngoc commune) were getting ready to go to bed when they heard a strong howling wind. At first, they thought it was the roar of a truck driving on the road. Only when they realized that the roof had been blown off, corrugated iron was flying, and the electricity had suddenly gone out did they realize it was a tornado.

The family of Ms. Le Thi My Nga (Solidarity Group No. 6, Hoa Lang Residential Group) was the one that suffered the most damage. The entire roof was blown away and swept across the street. Many corrugated iron sheets were separated and scattered hundreds of meters away. Fortunately, all 5 members of the family (including 4 children and Ms. Nga's mother) were safe.

“The tornado happened in just a few seconds. When the whole family was getting ready to go to bed, we heard a loud noise. At first, I thought it was a truck driving on the road. After I realized the roof had been blown off and the plastic ceiling had collapsed, I was shocked. Luckily, everyone was in the same room with a concrete ceiling so we were safe. Now, I still shiver when I remember it,” Ms. Nga said.

Mr. Vo Thanh Lien’s house, near Mrs. Nga’s, was also quite severely damaged. The entire iron porch roof, covered with a fairly sturdy corrugated iron sheet, was blown off, and lay precariously on the fence. In addition, part of the roof tiles were blown off, forcing him to climb up and re-roof the house in the middle of the night for fear of rainwater flooding in.

“I was about to go to bed when I heard the sound of wind like a storm. I opened the door and ran out to the porch and saw the wind howling, the power lines across the street were sparking and then the power went out. In a moment, the porch roof and tiles were blown away. I have lived here for a long time, but this is the first time I have seen such a terrible tornado,” said Mr. Lien.

Although it only lasted for a moment, the tornado caused heavy damage to many households in Huong Tra Ward. Mr. Bui Ngoc Huy, Vice Chairman of Huong Tra Ward People's Committee, said that according to statistics, 30 houses in 9 solidarity groups in Hoa Lang, Ngoc Bich, Dong Hanh residential groups (old Tam Ngoc commune, now Huong Tra Ward) had their roofs blown off or damaged by the tornado on the night of November 16. Of these, 11 houses had their roofs completely blown off, the rest had their roofs partially blown off.

In addition to the damage to houses, a 3,000m2 greenhouse for growing flowers for Tet also completely collapsed. Many trees fell, blocking rural traffic routes. On the morning of November 17, the Ward People's Committee assigned working groups and militia forces to assist people in cleaning up, making initial repairs, and clearing fallen trees to clear the roads. At the same time, the locality is urgently conducting inspections, assessing the extent of damage and making records to soon have a plan to support people.

The tornado on the night of November 16 also caused heavy property damage to people living along National Highway 40B, Chien Dan Commune. Mr. Le Van Ninh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chien Dan Commune, said that the tornado damaged about 56 structures and houses. Of which, 27 houses had their roofs blown off or damaged (including 3 houses with completely blown roofs). The locality also recorded 4 people injured by the tornado. Immediately after the tornado, people took the injured victims to the hospital for first aid. The police and militia of the commune promptly arrived at the scene to clear the roads, remove trees and fallen structures to ensure smooth traffic and safety for the people.
