In the 33rd minute, Phan Tuan Tai took a free kick. Bui Hoang Viet Anh headed the ball, but goalkeeper Zion Suzuki could not catch it. Pham Tuan Hai quickly ran in to score a goal against the Japanese team. This was the first time the Vietnamese team scored 2 goals against Japan in an official match.

Vietnam team took a 2-1 lead. Before that, Takumi Minamino opened the score, Nguyen Dinh Bac equalized 1-1. All of Vietnam team's goals against Japan so far have come from set pieces.
