Xiaomi phones increase in price due to pressure from chip prices

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi said rising memory chip prices have increased the cost of making mobile phones, after the pricing of its new Redmi K90 series disappointed the market.

"Cost pressure has been passed on to the prices of our new products," Xiaomi President Lu Weibing wrote on Weibo. "Memory chip costs have risen far beyond expectations and may continue to rise."

Xiaomi launched the Redmi K90 last week with a starting price of 2,599 yuan (9.6 million VND) for the regular version (12 GB RAM, 256 GB storage). This price is higher than the 2,499 yuan (9.2 million VND) of the predecessor version K80 launched in November 2024.

Lu Weibing said that consumers may be disappointed by the price gap between the configurations. Therefore, Xiaomi will reduce the price of the most sought-after K90 model (12 GB RAM, 512 GB storage) by 300 yuan (1.1 million VND) to 2,899 yuan (10.7 million VND) in the first month of sale.

The global race for chips for use in artificial intelligence applications has tightened supplies of conventional chips used in smartphones, personal computers and servers, according to Reuters .

EU finds Meta and TikTok breached transparency obligations

In announcing the preliminary results of an investigation, the European Commission (EU) said that US technology group Meta and Chinese-owned social networking app TikTok had breached their legal obligations by failing to provide researchers with full access to public data.

The EU is tightening control over “tech giants” through the Digital Services Act (DSA).

A Meta spokesperson told Reuters that the company disputes the suggestion that it violated the DSA, while TikTok said it remains committed to transparency.

“Allowing researchers to access platform data is an essential transparency obligation under the DSA, as it enables the public to monitor the potential impact of platforms on our physical and mental health,” the European Commission said in a statement.
