The winding roads, the narrow alleys surrounding the traditional three-room houses from the 70s and 80s, the colorful murals on the walls, the gentle and friendly smiles of the people in Nhon Ly fishing village (Binh Dinh)... all evoke a feeling of tranquility and relaxation, yet also a sense of novelty, along with a touch of nostalgia for bygone times.

Wander through the winding alleys.

Arriving in Binh Dinh in July, the scorching sun and sea breeze made us hesitate a little. However, after about 30 minutes of traveling from the center of Quy Nhon city to Nhon Ly commune, standing outside the welcome gate and looking out into the distance, the small fishing village was covered by a vast, boundless expanse of blue sea, creating an incredibly peaceful and poetic scene that left a deep impression on us.

Nhon Ly fishing village is a coastal fishing village located in Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province. It was once a poor, little-known fishing village covering an area of about 1.4 hectares, mostly consisting of rolling hills and white sand.

However, thanks to its perfect natural scenery, the fishing village has now become a famous tourist destination, attracting visitors whenever they visit Binh Dinh.

In Nhon Ly fishing village, Quy Nhon city (Binh Dinh province), you won't find smooth, paved roads; instead, you'll find winding, meandering roads that hug the coastal landscape of Central Vietnam, going up and down slopes.

Mr. Dan (61 years old), a resident of the fishing village, said that these winding paths were built by the locals to reduce the wind from the sea and to create shade to combat the sweltering heat.

Many young people are attracted by the simple, rustic charm of Nhon Ly fishing village.

Walking around the fishing village, you'll see that the terrain here is truly unique. You can climb from the foot of the village to the top of a slope and then loop back down; sometimes you're walking beside the porch of one house, but above your head is the courtyard of another.

Walking around the narrow alleys, just wide enough for motorbikes and pedestrians to pass each other, you'll find colorful, vibrant walls depicting a variety of themes, from flowers, plants, and birds to images related to the lives of people in the coastal village…

The vibrant red bougainvillea vines lining the narrow alleys are a distinctive feature of Nhon Ly fishing village, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province.

The murals adorning the walls create a striking focal point that attracts tourists every time they visit the fishing village.

Each painting has its own unique color scheme and theme, captivating visitors.

The tranquil seascape, with its clear blue waters stretching to the horizon, along with small boats anchored at the harbor entrance or those bobbing far offshore, are the most common sights in Nhon Ly fishing village. Despite being a fishing village, it is completely free of the fishy smell and very clean.

In the fishing village of Nhon Ly, mothers and wives wait for their husbands and sons to return from fishing trips, then sit together and tell each other stories of their daily lives.

The eateries catering to fishermen are nestled deep within narrow alleys, creating an atmosphere that is both unique and familiar!

Familiar because many houses were built in the traditional Vietnamese village architecture from the 70s and 80s, with spacious courtyards and bougainvillea trellises in front, and green window frames that both possess a simple beauty and evoke a sense of nostalgia for the old days.

In the fishing village of Nhon Ly, many houses built in the 1980s feature traditional Vietnamese village architecture typical of coastal regions.

Having lived on this land for nearly 70 years, Mr. Thuan said that his house is a small house located halfway up the slope.

Built in 1989, the house features classic architecture typical of a seaside village. It's a three-room house, modest in size but sufficient for the family to live in and cherish for three generations. From the front door, opening it offers a complete sea view.

Many young people enjoy taking photos and checking in at these old houses.

He said that when visiting the fishing village, you must go to the ancient well, which is nearly 200 years old. This used to be the source of water for the entire village.

“No matter how dry it is, there’s always enough water year-round for everyone. But now, with better economic conditions, people use less water from this well. The well has been renovated for tourists to visit, and the water is very clear and cool…” – Mr. Thuan enthusiastically shared more interesting things about the fishing village with us.

Huong Giang ( from Hanoi ) chose Nhon Ly fishing village as her destination for a trip with friends.

During a trip with friends to Nhon Ly fishing village, Huong Giang (Cau Giay district, Hanoi) shared: “I’ve been here for a day, choosing Nhon Ly - Quy Nhon as my destination because I wanted to experience the real life of the fishermen here. This place is truly wonderful.”

Huong Giang loves the streets adorned with murals, the small slopes winding between the traditional three-room houses of the locals before leading out to the sea. Giang says that she will return again in the not-too-distant future.

Having visited Nhơn Lý eight years ago, Bùi Đức Hợp (Ba Đình, Hanoi) was extremely surprised by the changes in the fishing village upon his return. “Many houses have been rebuilt to be more spacious and modern, interspersed with the old traditional houses. Many restaurants, hotels, eateries, and homestays have sprung up, and tourism services are much better…”

The scenery and people remain as peaceful as ever. Coming here, I feel 'healed' by the beauty of nature, the sea breeze, and the people here," Mr. Hop shared.

Listen to the heartfelt stories of people from the coastal region.

Under the fading sunlight as the sun sets over the sea near the fishing village, fisherman Nguyen Minh Tan (64 years old, Ly Luong village, Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province) recounts the story of how more than three generations of his family have lived on this land.

He said that no one knows how old the Nhon Ly fishing village is. All they know is that since the sea came into existence, this fishing village has grown and flourished. Most of the people here were born in the village and grew up relying on the sea for their livelihood.

The boats and basket boats are anchored at the mouth of the sea.

In his memory, the images that remain closely associated with his childhood to this day are of generations of people setting sail: "The rich tied their lives to large ships, while the poor laughed and enjoyed themselves in small basket boats."

Every day, he would bid farewell to his father early in the morning and greet him when night fell. Sometimes his father would be away for a whole week, but each time he saw his father's figure, his heart would overflow with joy, as the bountiful catches of shrimp and fish signaled the arrival of abundant meals for the whole family for a long time to come.

Mr. Tan shared that now, following in their father's footsteps, his two children are continuing the journey of "conquering the open sea."

At the age of five, he went to sea with his father, helping him with fishing. And so it continued, "from father to son," until he retired from fishing and handed over the boat to his two sons.

Every day at 5 a.m., his two sons, along with other local fishermen, would set sail about 2-3 nautical miles from shore to cast their nets, returning to shore at 4 p.m. After each fishing trip, the fishermen would unload their catch at the fish port for traders to buy. From there, the seafood would spread to urban markets and penetrate inland. Successful fishing trips brought the family hundreds of millions of dong. Even the worst trips still yielded tens of millions of dong.

According to Mr. Tan, fishermen in Nhon Ly fishing village annually prepare to repair their fishing boats, nets, and other fishing equipment in preparation for trips during the stormy season, around the 8th or 9th lunar month.

A scene of traders arriving at the seafood market to buy in bulk catches of fish and shrimp from fishermen after their fishing trips at Nhon Ly fishing port, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province.

In recent years, as tourism has begun to develop, a segment of the village's youth has abandoned fishing to switch to service jobs on land.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tri, the owner of a homestay located right next to the beach, after 2016, many families in Nhon Ly switched from fishing to tourism business, investing in boats to transport tourists, buying electric vehicles, opening restaurants and eateries, and many exploration tourism companies have also sprung up.

With the increasing number of tourists, and recognizing the potential for tourism development in the fishing village, he switched to working in tourism more than two years ago, abandoning his family's fishing business.

From the initial steps of self-learning and experimenting with tourism, he aimed to develop sustainable tourism based on local culture, with the goal of encouraging tourists to stay longer and experience the local culture and way of life.

Currently, he owns a homestay for tourists named after himself, combined with developing tours around Binh Dinh province such as Ky Co - Eo Gió, Hon Seao, etc.

Tourists enjoy fishing at Hon Seo, Nhon Ly commune, Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province.

According to Mr. Tri, at this time of year, tourists can go fishing, squid fishing at night, etc. In the early morning, they can go to the fishing port to watch the locals exchange and sell seafood, and then buy fresh seafood to cook themselves.

Come visit and check in at Ngoc Hoa Pagoda - home to the tallest two-bodied Avalokiteshvara Buddha statue in Vietnam today.

Alternatively, you can stroll through the narrow alleys, take photos with the colorful murals depicting the diverse lives of coastal fishermen; listen to the gentle sound of the waves, immerse yourself in the simple yet warm life of the locals, and leave behind all the worries of modern life.

“Everything feels like a dream. A decade ago, no one would have thought that the impoverished fishing village of Nhon Ly, with only sun, wind, and sand, could be transformed like it is today. Every summer, especially on weekends, tourists from all over, particularly from the North and Central Highlands, flock to my homestay, and it's always fully booked…” – Mr. Tri shared.

Leaving the fishing village and heading towards the city center, continuing my journey to explore Binh Dinh province, Nhon Ly left me with a feeling that is difficult to describe.

The unique characteristics of the local maritime culture will become a valuable asset for tourists to explore and experience. In the not-too-distant future, I believe that Nhon Ly fishing village will attract a large number of tourists, contributing to making Binh Dinh one of the leading maritime cultural centers in Central Vietnam.
